Proof that Nurses and Nurse Aides are Angels

I heard this story at church a while ago, and I think it is proof that nurses (and nurse aides!) are angels! In this story from 1 Kings, the prophet Elijah is running for his life from Jezebel. He has told his servant to wait in a nearby town, while he goes into the desert and contemplates giving up. 1 Kings 19: 4-5...while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, Lord," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." Sometimes our patients are feeling hopeless, at the end of their ropes. Being physically ill can be a real desert time for people. They may feel like they don't have the energy to "work" at getting well; they may feel like giving up. Sometimes something as simple as encouraging someone to eat, to nourish their poor, tired, sick body, is enough to give them that little bit of hope that they need to regroup and continue healing, or to enjoy the time they have left. So, when you are taking people to the bathroom, or helping them with their bathing, or just getting them out of bed for breakfast or lunch, know that what you are doing is very important! Remember the angel that God sent to Elijah in the desert. The angel did not perform a complicated dressing change, or educate him about the dangers of sleeping in the desert. The angel simply said, "Get up and eat."

When I was a CNA, I had a marvelous lady for a manager who had tears in her eyes as she told us, "I really believe you are all angels from God and I love you!"

She was a glorious old nurse and she really had a perception of nursing that was very spiritual. She was very sincere and passionate.

Oh, but she was the best manager ever!

When I worked in LTC, hardly a day passed when a resident did not tell at least one of us that we were angels.

I loved being a CNA and there was no reward greater than knowing what we did each shift for those who need us and found comfort with us.

I'm sorry if this sounds cheesy, but I mean it... and I'm not really a mushy person!

Thanks for sharing. Nursing for me IS a ministry. I love to motivate my patients and their families when they feel they have nothing left. I truly thank God that He has allowed me to become a nurse and minister to His people.

Indeed, nurses are angels, or for that matter, whomever takes the time to lift another persons spirits by offering a reassuring touch or a smile. As nurses we get so busy nursing the body that we forget to nurse the other aspects of what can really help the healing process. Keep up the good work, and if you can, smile.

For me, as a CNA, I do believe nursing care is doing Gods work. Remembering that helps me to do my job with compassion. I am now a nursing student and pray that I maintain and keep this mindset when i begin working as a nurse. Matt 25:40 says: "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

I think that the people we care for are seen by some as "least" but are actually very important to God, an this makes my work caring for them important.
