The worst job I had prior to becoming a nurse was a checkout clerk at a grocery store. I couldn't stand the rude customers or any of my coworkers. I felt as if I was always there due to the 8-hour shifts and irregular schedule (noon to 9pm one day, 6am to 3pm another day, 10am to 7pm the next day, 3pm to 11pm the day after that).
Nursing changed my life since it allowed me to enter the middle class. I grew up in a household that lived from paycheck to paycheck. Utilities were sometimes disconnected and meals were sometimes missed due to no money. Nursing enables a comfortable lifestyle where I eat what I want and don't live from hand to mouth.
Worst job was as a tobacco field hand - high school summer job. Next worst was as an assembler in a small capacitor factory. From there I went to nurses' aide in a nursing home. This was the late sixties/early seventies, when turning sixteen meant they had to pay me minimum wage: $1.10/hour.
My favorite job was working at a grocery store as a courtesy clerk. Aka bagger. I also worked at a movie theater.....oh the lack of responsibility.
My least favorite I worked at a continuing education school for real estate agents. None of us had any experience and we basically were grading tests for these realtors who needed their ceus. So many angry phone calls.... But most of them waited last minute, as in the day before their license expired and per the state rules, you had to be enrolled in these courses 2 weeks prior to your expiration date...
It was still an interesting perspective.
I once had a day labor job sweeping the rodeo grounds. The guy in charge was constantly making threats and talking about how he shot his dog because he didn't like the way it looked at him. I've also worked at McDonald's, which was only slightly better ....still have a scar on my left arm from getting burned with hot oil while I was making fries.
I'm not a nurse yet (I start my program this fall), but the worst job I've ever had is a toss up between McDonald's and Walmart. Both paces were so awful that I can't decide which was worse.
I grew up like TheCommuter- very little money, sometimes no food, and often times the utilities would get shut off and that was not a fun way to live. I can't wait to get through school, get my license, and start working!
