How does your patient differ from people you meet in social situations?
What a funny, as in funny odd question. People we meet in social situations have very few similarities to people we meet as patients. I don't meet somebody in public and say "hi, my name is kbrn2002 and I'll be your nurse today." I am not asking people I meet what their pain level is. I am not accosting random strangers with a blood pressure cuff, and I am not requesting to look at their naked bodies...though there have been a few people I've met that I wouldn't mind asking to strip for me.
My friends frown on me educating them. Or waking them up at 2am to assess them.
But they would enjoy a call bell.
Best golden rule: Keep work work. And private life private life. And when you find yourself at a party with a former patient, do not engage. I repeat DO NOT engage. A "lovely to meet you" and slip away at first opportunity. "Have we met?" is not ideal.
And do not engage further in social media, even if it is to send them pics of your dog in antlers or inspirational quotes.
Come to think of it, my friends don't enjoy inspirational quotes either......
Reciprocity.
If I'm gonna check out some big azz draining wound on your butt and you're my friend YOU OWE ME BIG TIME! You're gonna be picking hair outta the drain or scraping sludge from under the refrigerator.
If you're a patient, I keep putting it off until it's a DSP (Day Shift Problem).
Next question please.
The people I meet in real life don't usually have their ass hanging out of a hospital gown.*USUALLY*

Hopefully in every way possible; it's my job, after all. When do we stop doing people's homework for them on this site?
