Your a nurse--You should know better!!

Nurses General Nursing

That is what I was told today by another nurse--the nurse at my sons school.

See I had graciously volunteered my time with about 25 other parents to take over the school for 45min so the entire staff could enjoy a Christmas lunch togather. I was assisgned to gym class. I had the 3rd graders. We could have played kick ball but the kids were not really paying attention--goofing off in line waiting for thier turn to kick---So I had the brilliant idea of lets play "Red Rover- Red Rover" --All kids were included, everyone had a great time.

When our time was up and we were putting on our coats one of the other moms asked what we did in gym class and I told her, that is when the school nurse over heard-eyes rolling/shoulders back and announced in a surpingsly lound voice in front of everyone including the principal. "Your a nurse-you should know better, Red Rover is known to pull childrens arms out of socket, can cause abdominal injuries and head injuries" etc etc etc. Apparently Red Rover has been banned from my kids school for about 10 years now!!

Yikes---if she only knew I actually let my boys climb trees, run with sticks and and play knuckels till someone cries...

I solemnly vow NOT to be one of those uptight parents that won't let my child go out and be a kid and run and jump and play. In fact I can't wait for the day she can.

That nurse is indeed an idiot. How dare she make you look as if you were incompetent simply by allowing children to do what they do best - PLAY.

Let's just give our kids helmets and tell them to stay in bed.

Soon there will be nothing "physical" about physical education.

I completely agree with others here, she's an attention hog. Never mind her ignorance, one day someone will come along and burst her bubble. Kudos to you for volunteering to help.

Yeah, we did all kinds of daredevil kid things, too. Thank God, none of us ever suffered very serious injuries. I remember being really scared, though, and angry when the Dad of the boy next door brought a big machine home, the kind that digs earth. I forget what you call it. And he let us get into the scooper and lifted us up way high. Yikes! That really was scary but no injuries.

I admit to my arms hurting while playing Red Rover and the runner would crash into my arms. We still loved it, though, played it in gym class.

I guess it's a new world.

It was probably the most fun the kids had all year. Good for you.

My daughter is well known for tripping on the sidewalk while walking (should've named her Grace..lol) and scraping her knees up. Guess I'll have to start carrying her 10 y/o self around to make sure she doesn't get hurt anymore. Sheesh.

Vamedic4, I'm starting to agree w/ you about phys. ed not being physical. One of the activities that they have the kids do in school is cup stacking. Cup stacking?? How physical is that? What about football? No, they can get broken bones, head injuries, and paralysis from that. Archery? Well, let's not get into the whole poking your eye out scenario. Dodgeball, baseball, softball? Ever been hit w/ one of those. You could cause concussion w/ that. You know, the more I think about it, cup stacking seems pretty safe. No wait, isn't that a drinking game? They're promoting underage drinking at my kids' school. I'm going to have a talk w/ the principal now.

I relate to WarEagle4Life. I also agree that the school nurse has some serious issues. Are you going to volunteer again?

Just wondering...what was your response to her? Honestly she should have appreciated your time donation, rather than try to make you feel bad. Its small minds that cause big trouble and it sounds like she was trying to make herself look good and knowledgeable by trying to make you feel small and stupid. Shame on her!

It's pretty wild at my kids school during the winter. Kids stand around really bored in the school yard, afraid to move. They are told....

No going in puddles,

get of the ice

get down from the hill

no sliding down the hill

etc,etc,

they can't do anything but stand there!:grn:

Schools are so afraid of being sued, kids can't be kids, god forbid they play. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about the ice, and snow.

Or hovercraft parents who demand that their children be kept safe at all costs.......even that of childhood itself.

I love my kids' schools. They still play dodge ball in gym. Can't get any better (or bloodier?) than that!!! My youngest lost a baby tooth in a mean game of dodge ball in 2nd grade. She was so proud--she was like "I got smacked in the face by the ball, didn't even cry, and bled everywhere! AND I caught the ball! It was so cool!"

I'm not raising kids who fear a little sweat, blood, or effort. I *do* carry good health and dental, though.

My kids are older but at their elemen. school they had bars. They were overhead bars and they could cross from one side to another or sometimes try to skip bars. That is how my kids came home with hands full of blister but so proud of what they could do. I did substitute yard duty and one day because a kid fell and broke his wrist they made a rule that only kids who could touch the first bar standing flat footed on one of the ends could do the bars. That pretty much excluded everyone except the average heighted 5th graders or very tall 4th graders. I am sure they eventually rethought that.

Also no tag. The more something is banned the more the kids want to do it.
