An Atheist Outnumbered by Christians at Work (an ethical dilemma)
Have been away for some time. Upon logging in I find an excellent thread from an athiest. I have a particular fondness for the athiests. I can always manage to find some empathy for the guy who's in the minority. This countries record on dealing with those in the minority alone is enough for me to find some empathy somewhere. Have been considering the dilema of the nurse who is asked by the patient to pray for them and the ensuing discussion on proper response. You obviously are outnumbered in your co-workers belief and Zealousness. It is tempting to wonder what would happen if they knew you are an athiest. I can imagine a few scenarios. I think it would all hinge on how they were informed and your reactions to the ensuing attempts to convert you. In past blogs on this subject I believe that I have stated that I am not a Christian. But.....I had a Grandmother who was. One of the finest women one could ever want to meet. Excellent role model. I also was employed by Nuns for a number of years. Agaijn, some of the finest people you would ever want to meet. The majority were also excellent role models (always a couple of odd balls in the bunch). I gotta love the Christians. It's the only response Ihave come up with that has kept me from picking up a stick and wacking them while I chase them around the church. These last few years I have vacilated between concern and irritation over ideas and behaviors put forth by many Christians. Have been praying for someone to step up to the plate and excercise leadership within the ranks. Last year I read "The myth of the Christian Nation", and breathed a sigh of relief. Therre is hope now. I even said, "Thank you Jesus"! It should be noted that this Minister was abandoned by a number of his flock as a result of his teaching. If you tell your co-workers I would suggest that you be prepared to love them because it might be your only defense.

I had no clue!
I am a licensed massage therapist as well as a registered nurse. I have practice massage therapy since 1986. Have practiced nursing since 1996. I have a private massage therapy practice and work as a nurse in the hospital setting. I practice swedish massage but over the years have incorporated Shiatsu massage within the framework of Swedish. I know Nurses that practice Theraputic Touch. It is not massage but a form of energy medicine. Also know one who is a Reiki Master. I have attained the second level of Reiki. Felt no particular calling to pursue the master level. I also have studied and practice reflexology. I don't find Swedish Massage physically taxing. To the contrary. I find it quite relaxing.

Good Old HIPAA Violation!
Odds are, the consequenses meted out were to send a message to all. Too bad it was your name attached to it. And yes, I think an inservice prior to the event was in order. There is an atmosphere of paranoia surrounding the entire HIPPA thing. We live in a country where litigation has become the norm.

Dangerous nurses
I have also met these unfortunate souls. Am very grateful that there have not been many. I have reported 2 in my career. Their behavior was outrageous. Thankfully, something was done to adress the issue both times.

I cannot do this job anymore!
I would reccomend investing in yourself. Try a few theraputic massages. They aid in balancing the psyche. They also assist in renewing your physical energy. Until you make the decision to leave nursing you will need all the strength you can muster. Don't do anything rash that you might regret.

Bad Managers
Oh yes, the administration. They truly are the last ones to know whats going. Most generally completely clueless.

Bad Managers
My experience with managers is that they are the last to know what is really going on. Many don't want to be told anything that they don't want to hear. They're just riding that wave called delusion. The system is set up for this.

Anybody please recommend a region of the country in great shortage of nurses?
St Louis area is still hiring. Of course the transition to the "bible belt" might be a shock as well as the weather. Humid in the summer and you never know what in the winter. For a future resume Barnes Hospital always looks excellent. It is also a teaching hospital. You'll see everything.

Should spelling count?
I love books therefor I own a dictionary. My Mother gave me one that weighs 10 lbs. I have a broad vocabulary from using the thing most of my life. Rarely use spellcheck but consider it a valuable tool. Jess, your posted quote by Mother Theresa is one of my favorites of her. What a hoot!

Apologizing when paging physicians
That is just plain wild. I too am sorry I missed that one.

Apologizing when paging physicians
I have observed this phenomina Think it's just part of the culture. I can't imagine why I would apologize for or ask another to accept an apology for simply doing our job. We could probably do away with the practice entirely if nurses had more clarity on when to call the Dr. and what information is expected to be supplied upon calling. It would cover any safety issues and I suspect that this could also be considered polite.

Atheists? How do you deal with religious people?
I am not a Christian, Wiccan, Athiest, or Pagan but.....I have friends from all the mentioned categories. They are bright, articulate, caring folks. The only one that annoys me is the Christian ( have been friends since childhood and she converted along the way). Am always threatening to steal her sign with the Ten Commandments out of her yard and put it up on the courthouse lawn. The only thing that deters me is I am afraid I'd end up before one particular magistrate and boy would I get a lecture. Probably community service also. She would'nt me sit in jail though. She loves me.:kiss

Switching from Psych to Med Surg?
Oh my gosh MickyB-RN. This was a final response to another thread entitled "Can Society Take The Place of God". It's a loooong one. Much discussion. I had unsecribed to the post because the Cristians and Athiest kept interjecting their person beliefs. The article in question was not about any particular belief, it was about the spiritual element in nursing being lost. Decided to make one last comment with the smilies. They are intended actually as great fun on my part. Had enjoyed the blog tremendously (along with the Athiests and Christians sparring) but the bottom line was that both groups were behaving innappropriatly within the context of nursing.coms guidelines. They just could'nt seem to stop themselves. What a hoot.....it's a wonder the thread was'nt shut down. Hope this gives you the drift of it all. The fact that you are asking and not writing me off as crazy tells me your a great Psych nurse. I'm sure you will do well in medicine. Your a communicator.
