Yale 2015

Published

I've never posted here before but I am going to be applying to Yale School of Nursing this fall for a 2015 start in the GEPN program, CNM/WHNP cohort. Wondering if there are others out there preparing to do the same? I'm heading down to their info session next week.

Hi everyone! I'm applying for the PNP track next year and just wanted to reach out and say good luck to everyone! The essay was extremely difficult but I hope it will be worth all the sleepless nights in the end.

Done and Done! What a way to spend Halloween. That essay killed me and i am still not sure if i answered all of the questions clear enough. Good Luck to you all and hopefully I will meet you in New Haven!!!

Happy deadline/Halloween to you all! I've been panicking all week waiting for my last recommender to send in her letter. After four personal emails and reminder emails from all the schools, she finally sent me a copy of her letter, an hour before Nov 1. PHEW. Looking forward to the slow updates as we figure out the interviewing process....I hope you all hear happy things from your top choice schools!

It is my understanding that during the first year (rn portion) no one has time for anything but school. During the masters portion you will have time to work part time or get involved in one of the many opportunities through Yale. Hope that helps and good luck!!!

I attended years ago as a traditional, experienced-RN student. My GEPN classmates (who had finished their initial year of basic nursing and were now in the MSN classes with me) all said that first year was basically, including all the necessary studying, 16h days, six days/week. They all seemed pretty shell-shocked by the experience. The pace and course load was not quite as bad for the second and third years, but I and one other experienced RN were the only students I knew of who were working part-time while in the program. None of the GEPN students I knew worked; they didn't get licensed until the end of their second year, so they couldn't work as RNs, and there was nothing else they could get a job doing that paid well enough to be worth sacrificing the precious study and personal time. Even after the GEPN students got licensed, none that I knew had any interest in working as (generalist) RNs because they had no interest in nursing at the generalist level; they were v. focused on the advanced practice role (although they were somewhat envious of my ability to make real money picking up prn shifts at the hospital on the weekends ...) A few of the students I knew were involved in other activities on campus. There are tons of interesting opportunities, but the nursing program is so demanding and rigorous that you end up having v. little extra time or energy.

Snoozyd, my academic recommendation is dragging her feet! I've emailed her 3 times and sent her reminders from the application. Still nothing! I'm getting really concerned. Admissions told me recommendation letters have until Monday considering the deadline is a Saturday. I really hope she gets it in by Monday! I'm worried. I really don't like relying on others for things like this. Good luck to you!

Thank you for the info! Super helpful! How did you like the program? Did you feel like the non nurses in gepn were adequate practitioners when they finished the program?

Happy belated Halloween everyone. I had the same problem with my last recommender!!!! Oh my goodness I was freaking out because he didn't respond to my reminder e-mails but he finally got it in today at around 10AM. I e-mailed the director of admissions to see what options I had if I got my letter in late and they said I had till Monday because they were gonna start reading applications on Monday. So hopefully you guys that still need the last letter that gives you a little extra time. I hope they get it in for you guys. :)

Ugh, just sent her ANOTHER reminder email! Eek! Freaking out. I hope my application process wasn't for nothing. :/

I hope she gets it in for you!!!!!

Thank you! Me too! I'm so frustrated!

@elkpark I thoroughly enjoy all of the healthcare volunteer programs/societies Yale offers, but I have also learned that working 4 hours a week (2nd and 3rd year) is better than none at all during a rigorous curriculum. I had similar recommendation issues Divalicious. One recommender is working extended-full work days, 7 days a week (I am also) so he has very little time to submit: for my last school.

I just submitted my GEPN FNP specialty application. I'm attracted to the community health focus at Yale - I'd love to work at the Haven Free Clinic!

Yale is my top choice and I'm also applying to the MSN generalist program at Hopkins, DNP program at U Vermont, and BSN programs at U Maryland, NYU, and Oregon Health and Sciences. I know I want to be and NP, but I'm flexible about how I get there.

Anyone else think the emails from Melissa Pucci are sweet? I feel like I have another mom checking in on me.

I'd love to hear about the process for everyone. Here's hoping we all get interviews.
