    Vanderbilt MSN 2016

Hello Vanderbilt MSN hopefuls! I am also a current prespecialty student and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. The one thing I can speak to is PMHNP interviews. Expect to be interviewed, but don't freak out if you don't hear from them, since some people are accepted without interviewing. Best of luck with all your applications!

MGH IHP Direct Entry NP 2015

Thats what I'm coming around to see, too. Speak with current students at any school you are considering is the best advice I got and the thing that's helped me the most. MGH grads do get good job placements in the area but it doesn't seem to help much getting to PhD programs (yes they have their own DNP but school name does unfortunately seem to matter in the PhD game). Speaking with a current student reassured me that Vandy is quick but it's not rushed. But both have pros and cons for sure! If the DNP is your goal then MGH is probably best bet. You're right to consider long term goals. Maybe see you at orientation 😉

MGH IHP Direct Entry NP 2015

Joke's on me! BOTH schools have my deposit money. ceddybear, good point. I'm curious how a Massachusetts native (no accent, but all of the brash mannerisms) would fit in down there, though.

MGH IHP Direct Entry NP 2015

Argh I'm doing the exact same thing - Vandy vs MGH. I keep saying I've made up my mind for MGH but then this nagging sense keeps telling me to look at Vanderbilt again. I haven't been able to go down to Nashville yet, though, so that trip should help make up my mind.

    Columbia ETP 2015

Previous year's boards seem to echo that whole "This year is the biggest class ever!" thing. I'm sure they admit a lot with the expectation that a good chunk of us will accept other offers

    Columbia ETP 2015

I wondered that, too! I don't know if it was here or some other board where someone said they started with 160 other people for ETP and then when they graduated from their specialty (psych) there were only 9 people??? Does that mean they bailed, or is it a small specialty, or are they broken up into groups? I've reached out to Columbia twice now asking if a current student would be willing to answer some of my questions. I haven't heard back yet.

    Columbia ETP 2015

I do like Columbia's program - more psychopharm, more counseling coursework. But as someone who isn't planning on staying in NYC, and who would ultimately like to get a doctorate, I'm unsure of Columbia's value. $$$ for the BSN, MSN, and then $$$ again for the PhD or DNP? I'm probably better off going slightly less expensive for a school somewhere I already have connections in my specialty, working up my experience, then figuring out the PhD or DNP maybe at a state school. NYC also isn't my kinda town, so I'm struggling to work up much enthusiasm beyond "It's an Ivy...and they have one or two more classes than this other program." In the long run I know I could pay it off. I've researched the different programs, but now am just trying to get in touch with grads to truly see how they felt about the value of their education. @Ccp123 - thank you for that blog post. There's not enough pragmatic advice out there when picking schools without it straight-up bashing a given program.

    MGH IHP Direct Entry MSN?

MissesOh I'm in the same (or very similar) boat! I live in Boston, got into both programs...I actually didn't plan to apply to Columbia at first. MGH was my safety, Yale was my reach. Didn't achieve my goal and now I'm deciding between the school I expected to attend and one that is significantly more expensive but sounds better. I think Columbia has some curriculum advantages. But I expext I'll settle in New England, so I'm having to guess if those classes are really worth an extra $40k+interest. I'll be at the info session tomorrow. Maybe they'll grant us a 2-day extension on the deposit deadline?

    Columbia ETP 2015

I did not get into Yale so now I'm really doubling down on my pro/con list between Columbia and MGH. I'm dying for the financial aid info so I can assess it better. Anyone else still unsure of Columbia?

    Yale 2015

Unfortunately for me, there's no PMHNP waitlist (at least, not in previous years - if someone gets psych waitlist news good job!). Congratulations to those of you that got good news!

How is housing managed? Is it very similar to undergraduate dorms - by that I mean, do you have overbearing RAs peeking in your room? How far do you have to go to get any groceries?

    Yale 2015

MGHIHP isn't technically part of MGH anymore. If you want to live in Boston or the general New England area, MGHIHP is fine. You do not necessarily have a hookup with MGH - if you've already worked for a Partners hospital (and left on good terms) you stand a better chance of being hired by another Partners hospital. It sounds like their preceptors are pretty scattered so you're not guaranteed a site within Partners Healthcare. Local hospitals definitely hire MGHIHP grads. I'm not sure how grads fare outside of New England.

Yeesh now I'm curious how long it'll take to get my packet. Does the packet include financial aid things?

madley, your public transit breakdown is incredibly helpful! Are there any sort of student discounts - either through the transit system itself, or through Columbia?

I think I'm going to be completely nauseated for the next 8 days. I was nervous but dealing until I saw the email. At least now we know for sure it'll be the 27th!
