Would you want your child to become a Nurse???

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I received an email notice from allnurses saying that I haven't logged onto the site for a long time which is true because I've been busy working a full-time job at one hospital and per diem at another. It was then I decided to take the opportunity to start a discussion that reflected a recent conversation I had with co-workers one night: would we want our children to become nurses? The response was a unanymous 'Hell NO!!' We generally were hoping that our hard work would allow our children to something 'better' and less stressful. Don't get me wrong; we enjoy our jobs and are grateful to be able to work with patients etc, but more and more, it seems like it is becoming more about saving money and charting 'correctly' to prevent law suits. At one hospital where I work, they fired the CNA's and the RN's have to do everything; that is, in addition to RN duties, we have to do I/O's, turning, cleaning post-poop, VS, EVERYTHING!!! At the other facility, as soon as humanly possible, they flex CNA's so that we end up having to do CNA-type stuff, in addition to the fingersticks, etc. Then they wonder why they have so much trouble getting people to come in when other nurses call off for 'sickness'. Also, it seems like management comes up with more and more ways to make charting more time consuming to protect the hospital from 'frivalous claims' from patients and family, etc. Of course they have staff who are paid to sit on their butts for 8 hrs/day and look for nurse charting errors, etc. They are now threatening write-ups for 'improper' charting. I told my co-workers to expect to be counseled sooner or later because we are human and dealing with 4-5 patients (in CA) AND their families. Nursing does not seem to be about patient care anymore; it seems to be about how to get the patient in and out as quickly as possible (unless they have good insurance), before they get a UTI, fall, or skin breakdown. So I ask each of you: Would you want your child to become a nurse as nursing stands now (at least in the med/surg/tele settings)????

Since it appears that nursing is dumbing down I would say I wouldn't encourage it, but if they wanted, I would support with a big push on graduate studies. Both my boys are tech people and one is in school to be a CPA and the other wants to join the Marines when he graduates high school. Love my boys :)

I'd love it and support it whole-heartedly if the child wanted to become a nurse. She had plans to do a BA to MSN program because her mother convinced her she'd be a "nurse leader" immediately upon graduation. She doesn't want to be a nurse, too much yukky stuff. She wants to be a "nurse leader". That plan fell through and now she wants to be a volunteer in a third world country -- which isn't looking good, either. In the mean time, she's teaching swimming and applying to be a excursion leader for African safaris. If she wanted to be a nurse or teacher -- or anything, really, where she could support herself -- I'd be thrilled.

My daughter starts her college adventure today. I am such a sentimental mush face right now....where has the time gone. :angrybird3:

She is intelligent, graceful, honest, kind, and beautiful. She is resilient, precise (anal retentive...don't know where she gets that from...:whistling:), stubborn, and trustworthy.

Did I sit her down and give her a reality check about nursing? You betcha. DO I think she will make a good nurse....yes I do. After some experience then travel nursing....She wants to teach or do CRNA but knows her BSN is not her terminal degree.

Am I happy? Yes. It is something she really wants. She has seen how nursing turned it's back on me a few times the last few years when I became ill...but she also saw how I could have a good job that I LOVED, paid well, and allowed me to always be there for may children.

I am SO PROUD of her!!!! As a parent you raise your children only so far then the rest is up to them. I see her from afar and she takes my breath away.

Good Luck today Baby on the beginning of the rest of your beautiful life!!!!

My oldest son is almost finished with his LPN, and rolls right into his ADN in January.

His happiness is my happiness, and I could not be more proud.

My daughter considered getting her BSN (she is a sophomore in HS right now), but her long term goal is cardio-thoracic surgery. SO I told her a BSN would probably not be the best route unless she really wants to be a nurse. She definitely wants to be a doctor, so it's pre-med for her when she goes. I did not influence her choice in any other way. IF her goal was to be an RN, I would support her 100%. She's already had lots of reality checks from me about nursing/medicine and the challenges faced working in either. I don't live vicarously through her and it's truly her choice, not mine. I made mine for better, or worse.

My mom told me not to do it, but I did. I am mostly happy with my decision. I'd like more tuition help to go back to school, as where I work offers pittance to go back. I'd like it paid 100%, or better than $1000/year. They know how much graduate courses cost.

I think my kids can make more money doing work that is easier and without the hassle I deal with daily, plain and simple. I don't want my kids to be disrespected.

No

I would also be realistic about future education regarding nursing as well. I am a recentish graduate and I can't tell you how many of my peers said that a BSN was just a stepping stone to CRNA, NP, CNS, CNM, JD or whatever. The likelihood of a ICU nurse ever getting into CRNA is small yet everyone wants to be a CRNA or NP right out of school. If you can't handle the fact you might be a staff nurse for the duration of your nursing career do not do nursing.

It's just as silly as every ore-med saying they are going to be a surgeon...

To put it simply, if that is what they wanted to do I wouldn't discourage it.

Although I have encouraged my child to be whatever she's wants to be, I have definitely discouraged her from being a nurse. To me it's a horrible profession and I hate everything about it. Unfortunately; until I can find that rich doctor (ya right) I'm stuck doing it. Don't get me wrong I give my patients the best possible care and have plenty of "your a pickle" cards to prove it. But I have already discouraged my child and her friends to stay far away from nursing!

No I would not! I would not want them to go thru the stress and back breaking work, being mandated and short staffed! I would hope they would have a better life and job than that!

Uh, no. Please no.

No, in fact I tell them to be anything other than a nurse if they decide to go into health care. The nurse is the person standing at the bottom of the hill with arms wide open.....and we all know what rolls down hill. I personally believe nurses are worked harder and disrespected more than many other types of healthcare employees.

Well EMS is ranked as one of the most dangerous professions (up there with police) even though fire fighters get all the cred lol. Anyway we work 24 sometimes 48 hours shift with no guaranteed breaks or sleep AND make on average about 15 dollars and hour. EMT"s make even less, close to minimum wage. Oh all it's not that respected most people think ambulances are just a fast taxi with oxygen, even those in healthcare don't know about our scope. Yea modern day EMS is in it's infancy and hopefully this will change in the next few decades.

Not to make it a competition or anything but it could be worse! grass is always greener......
