If you had it to do it over again would you become a nurse? Would you rather persue another occupation?

Nursing is hard work, but I thank God that I am a nurse. I am blessed with a good income even now when the economy is so bad and it is very rewarding to know that I can do something to help another person. We all have days when we wish we did something else, but that is when you need an extra day off or a long vacation.

Just a short time ago I would have said absolutely. I'm proud to be a nurse, don't get me wrong. But I'm getting really tired of being treated like a para-professional (punch in, don't you dare accumulate 15 minutes overtime, did you initial every tiny box on that restraint form?, why didn't you answer that phone--while you were in isolation cleaning up a code brown?, etc etc etc). I'm getting tired of switching schedules back and forth from days to nights and nights to days.
If I could do it over again, I'd do pharmacy.

Although I have learned a lot over the past 20 years of being a nurse, I would not put myself through it all again. Had I known how very long the hours could be, the abuse by supervisors as well as fellow nurses and the constant shots at self-esteem, I'd never had started it.

I don't think I could do it again. But in this economy...even many doctors wished they were nurses. There are many things you could do with your RN. I've done many things, from cleaning poop on med/surg to fast-pace ER to paper pushing if home care, case management/utilization review.I'm looking for a part-time deal (with benefits) so I could do things that matter to me.

Yep, would become an RN again in a heartbeat as this profession as lead me on many more adventures than I ever expected.
Never would have visited some of the states without the excuse of a nursing convention. Even got to visit Allnurses headquarters and met some of staff in Vegas, dine at Emerils Delmonico along with seeing the Grand Canyon, visit Disneyland, Washington, DC etc. Found several great needlepoint shops as result of travels too!
Learned more about the human spirit and caring from my patients than I ever expected. Those once-in-a-lifetime, priceless experiences are what I think about to get me through the bumps and tough times too.

Don't get me wrong, I love my present job. I really do. And I really liked the job I held prior to this one. That covers about 8 years. There are years before that where the jobs were not as good. They ranged from ok to very very bad.
But if I had to do it over again, I might not choose nursing. It might be nice to work with people in a position where everything is not so damn serious. You know, work with antiques or books or the great outdoors etc.
But I am thankful. Nursing gave me the chance to move to several different states and find employment easily. I never will suffer from unemployment. And I am truly thankful for that.

Been a nurse for seven years, can't imagine wanting to do anything else for a living.
