Why are so many people today shunning real medicine, vaccines etc for hoaxes and gimmicks like essential oils, weight loss powders, etc? Any ideas why so many are turning away from actual medicine?

Okay I’ll just pack garlic around with me then. And a bunch of bottles of essential oils.

No need to be snide about it. There is some science to back it up.

It should be noted that neither one of those articles suggested much less proved that essential oils can be substituted for conventional treatments for bacterial or fungal infections.

When, or if, ITEOTWAWKI, happens I'll be happy to chew or rub garlic, or whatever you're supposed to do with it, and chew on willow bark.

Until then I'll get my vaccinations and ciprofloxacin.

That is very true, That is what I said in an earlier post in this thread. I was simply pointing out that there is some value to their use in ancient medicine and in a survival emergency. The OP suggests that it is all witchcraft, and has no medical value whatsoever.

On the other hand, the use of crystals, chants, runes and the like obviously holds no medical value other than placebo.

There's no resurgence. They've always been there. Now they just have more of a platform with the internets.

And don't forget your magical healing crystals.

If you're in the market, Gwyneth Paltrow will sell you a $100 crystal egg that you can stick up your va-jay-jay to cure your depression, menstrual cramps, and infertility. ?

Probably because people no longer trust it. With so many attempting to live a more natural, holistic lifestyle they are opting out of the high cost of chemically dominant medicine that imitates what nature has provided for free forever.

"witchcraft"?

Calling essential oils, the antivax movement, prayer/faith having, and generally lumping naturopathy and homeopathy into all the same category is insulting enough being that you clearly understand nothing of natural medicine or its uses.

Then calling it all witchcraft? Suddenly we're all back in the middle ages. Will all the gingers please line up to be burned at the stake? Thanks.

In ancient times garlic was used to prevent infection. Garlic has antibacterial qualities as do other oils.

...and sometimes folk medicine turns into evidence based medications ?

*Please note that I'm advocating for evidence based researched uses for folk medicine and not being supportive of "hocus pocus"

Bro/sir/ma'am, you come on here stating very bold statements. If you can not show an instance where this is happening , you need not post on a forum where are objective medical professionals roam.

What specific hoaxes? There are known uses for essential oils.

Thank you! While there are plenty of people willing to go with glorified snake oil for their treatment, that doesn't mean that medical professionals should throw the baby out with the bath water on all complementary therapies.

God knows, there are enough examples of Western medicine leading to bad ends, mostly for $$$, e.g. the lies about OxyContin, the aggressive push for more statins, in spite of the potential serious side effects...

This isn't new. Before modern medicine could offer real effective treatment, people had folk remedies. A few remedies might have had beneficial effect on the human body, but most were most effective at giving people a feeling of empowerment, like they could do something and feel less helpless.
