I am a prenursing student and with the wait list as long as 2-3 years to get into nursing school, will there still be a demand for nurses by the time I would finish nursing school with an ADN? I am guestimating that by the time I finish my prereq and then get put on the waiting list, and then finish nursing school, at the earliest, would be the year 2010. Will there still be a demand?
Thanks for everyone's input! :)

From the student's point of view........lets hope so :sofahider
Seriously speaking, I agree with Siri......there will always be a demand for nurses :)
As long as humans walk the face of the earth, there will be a demand for the age old profession of nursing.
I was talking with a RN at the local gas station yesterday. We were discussing her job, and my schooling. I told her so many people want to go in to nursing and she thought that strange. She said there is definitely a shortage all over the country. She said some of the new young nurses that come on board, work a few years and realize they don't like it, and move on to other area's of nursing that do not involve bedside nursing. I thought that was interesting, being that I am middle aged and going into this. She boosted my spirits for sure.

I am middleaged, too, going into nursing. Times have changed, young people think a little different than we did back when..... remember, they didn't have computers back then

I am in my 1st semester of an ADN program. I should graduate spring of 2007, hopefully!!! In one of my 2 nursing classes for this semester we focus mostly on community-based nursing care. With that, we have learned a lot about where nursing will be in 5 years(2010). Even in the books(Fundamentals of Nursing by Taylor, Lillis, & LeMone and the other is Community-Based Nursing by Hunt), they are stating that the nursing shortage is only going to get worse and that we, as nurses, will move from the hospitals to community-based care. Don't worry, as a nurse, you will always have a job!!! :wink2: If you get a chance check out the community-based nursing book, chapter 1. it will give you a pretty good idea of where the nursing care will be in 5 to 10 years.
I hope I have help.

:thankya: Thanks everyone for your input! I guess I really won't have to worry about finding a job when I finish school in the next five to six years! That sounds like such a long time, hopefully the waiting list will dwindle down a bit and I will be able to finish school sooner than I expect. Wishful thinking!
Thanks!!
