Will there still be a shortage in the year 2010?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am a prenursing student and with the wait list as long as 2-3 years to get into nursing school, will there still be a demand for nurses by the time I would finish nursing school with an ADN? I am guestimating that by the time I finish my prereq and then get put on the waiting list, and then finish nursing school, at the earliest, would be the year 2010. Will there still be a demand?

Thanks for everyone's input! :)

:lol2: I've never heard it called such an eloquent name. :lol2:

I have seen it on the "Artists" name tags....take a closer look next time you have one of their delicious creations, I love SUBWAY!

Thanks for suggesting it, believe it or not but SUBWAY is my son's favorite fast food. We haven't been in a while, so maybe this weekend we'll go and try it.

We love Subway, I can't believe I haven't seen it before. Either that, or I just don't remember seeing it. lol

hmmm, may have to have Subway tonight. lol

sunnyjohn suggested the new Parmesan. Enjoy and let me know if you notice the term on the nametag. :lol2: they might have changed it, I haven't been lately. Too busy with school and all...

I will study tissues for test 2 full steam ahead now that I am passed the first lecture and lab test. We have a CD available and I printed hardcopies off it and made my own tissue book out of it. Now I can carry it around everywhere I go and study. I am on my way to the gym and will look at it while I ride the bike for 30 minutes.

Have a great weekend

There will always be a nursing shortage. Don't worry about a job. I don't know where you live, but I would suggest applying at multiple schools. The average age of nurses in the state of Texas is mid to late 40's which means that a large majority of nurses here will be retiring in the not too distant future. If not, there is always crna, np, sales rep opportunities, forensics you can diversify into. My best suggestion is to specialize as soon as you graduate. It will make you much more marketable.

the biggest reason for the waiting list is that they don't have enough instructors to teach. Yes there will still be a shortage it projected to continue to get worse to 2020. due to baby boomers and the avg age of nurses right now is i think like 45.

I work in a hospital full time, I am a clinical instructor part time for a major university in our city, and I run a lawn mowing buisness, I make about the same teaching nursing as I pay a college student to mow lawns for me. Why do you think there is a shortage of nurses?

Isn't it hard to specialize when you are a recent graduate? I heard that you are limited to the general med/surg floors for a few years because the other departments want an RN with experience. I would think that there are some departments that are willing to bring in a new graduate but like I said, that's not common. I would love to jump right into the area that I am interested in, but I'm fearful that it won't be that easy without some experience under my belt.

Yes; of course, the baby boom generation of nursing is just begining to retire...mass retirement probably in 10 to 15 years...

Oh, & as far as getting into the RN program locally, it is a 5years wait in Michigan.;if I was out of high school & thought about a nursing degree, I would make plans for another profession

Nurses in 2010 or 2020 might not have to worry about finding a job but unless things change they WILL have to worry about paying bills; our DON says (and I agree) the best way to end the nursing shortage is pay a decent wage! You know one that supports a family on one income AND allows savings for retirement!

It's amazing how little pay nurses earn even with a post grad education- and how much we're expected to sacrifice for little or no compensation other than personal and altruistic satisfaction. Management and the insurance industry loves this employee population- so many workers willing to work 'for the love of it,' and those who complain 'love ain't enough' are often berated by their own co-workers!

not retiring any time soon because I can't afford to!

Yes, the waiting list is kind of crazy. I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but in order to apply to nursing school at the community college level, after you have your prereqs finished, you can't just apply at the college directly for the nursing programl, they are centralizing the admission criteria and application process for the community college nursing programs. So after taking the entrance exam you apply online at a centralized location, get a number, and wait to be notified that you have been accepted as long as you pass the entrance exam. Such a long process compared to a friend of mine who graduated this past May with a BSN and she didn't have to do any of this. She just went down to the community college and enrolled and that was it, she was enrolled in the nursing program. I am estimating a long wait before I finish school. :crying2:

In my part of the country, in southern Oregon, at Rogue Community College, they don't have the enterance exam anymore, it is just done by grades and LOR's(Letter of Recommendation) and you just wait. The thing that I find wierd is that the CNA course is no longer required for either nursing program. yet they expect you to know what you are doing before you go into the program. Odd I think but hey what can you do.
