I've been thinking alot about my Facebook account since all the problems it has brought to people not only in nursing school but also peoples lives.
So my question to you is: if you get accepted to nursing school will you delete your account? Or if in school now will you delete after you graduate?
I think that if you have privacy settings and aren't being crazy posting pictures of yourself naked or drunk, it really shouldn't matter. And if I don't get a job just because I'm a person that has opinions and whatnot then whatever. Thats really stupid to judge people just because they have a facebook and say or do things that you don't agree with. What happened to people minding their own darn business?? People get in trouble for wayyy too much these days. In the words of George Lopez "I cant never do nuthinnn!"

LOL
I agree with you. What does it matter what we do on facebook as long as it isn't hindering our work? As long as youre keeping your work/school life separate then to me, there isn't a problem. It makes no difference what I do in my spare time as long as it doesnt affect my school or career. And like you said, if I dont get a job b/c I have a certain political or religious affiliation posted on my page or something like that, then I dont really wanna work for that person anyways.
That having been said, Im not saying I think a person should be able to post dirty pics of themselves and post vulgar status updates and things like that, and expect there to be no consequences.
I thought about turning up the privacy settings but then I realized im friends with half the hospital as it is so if the managers, HR wanted to see what I have gotten into, they can find out. I did some crazy things when I was a little younger and I have some funny stuff that has happened to me posted up there. Im not trying to hide anything from them so if they wanted to see, I would have no issues showing them who I am. I have nothing to hide.
I have a few of my classmates on Facebook. I recently networked with a classmate who got a DON job at a SNF. She offered me a job as a per diem nurse and then deleted her account from Facebook after I was hired. I can understand that she did that to keep her professional life separate from her personal life. I only worked day, no call back. and she's now ignoring my calls. Anyways, I recently found her on Facebook though a mutual classmate. She is listed with her First name and Maiden Name Initial. I gave her all of my info (SSN, bank, address, background, etc) I feel violated as she knows so much about me. She thought she couldn't be found on Facebook but, I found her. She even posted a picture of herself at work. LOL This is pure evidence that you can't hide on the internet! I don't want to burn bridges and will just try to keep the lines of communication open.
Oh, and I'm in the process of trying to get into a RN bridge program. I don't plan on deleting my account but, I do plan on adding classmates just not planning of working with them!
I did not delete my FB account, nor will I. If you're that paranoid about posting on FB, be paranoid about posting ANYWHERE on the internet, especially in nursing specific forums. :-P
Seriously though...be a critical thinker and use your best judgement about what it is you put out there for others to read and see.

Actually, some of my teacher friends put their first name and middle initial. Their kids are always trying to find them. It's seems to be working for the teachers.
