Where O' Where are the wise ones?

It's feeling kinda lonely without some of our fearless leaders and their sage advice. Is any one else feeling this way?

Nah, no offense. I just don't hold any particular poster up on a pedestal the way many do here. I think everyone has valuable insight, even noobs and students.

I'm also anti-establishment, which is why I would never self-identify as a member of any club, such as the COBs. Any club that would have me as a member, and all that...

I will say, though, that GrnTea is one of my absolute favorite posters here. Even when we disagree about something

I understand how you feel. I do agree that everyone here does and will continue to make contributions, I just see the trend of some and I emphasize SOME seem to have unreasonable expectations and quickly get angry if they don't get the response they want. I'm not just talking about students and young nurses either. I think the crusty old bat stuff is funny and somewhat accurate for a lot of nurses...young or old, myself included. I don't know about you but I can get grouchy on occasion while doing my work. Anyway glad your cool, I look forward to reading your posts.

Anybody who's read my posts knows that I can get pretty snarky. Those same people also know that I am honest and willing to respond to most requests for help and invest significant time in trying to explain things. If someone can't occasionally accept the former, then they've lost any expectation of the latter.

I'm a regular person, with a broad range of emotions with little skill nor desire to mask them. Take all of me or none of me... I figure my handle's sufficiently recognizable, both in uniqueness and forum presence, for most to know what they're going to get when they read my posts.

One of the very nice things about not being a moderator or a 'guide' is that I give myself the liberty to say what I want since I'm representing only myself. I figure if I cross the line too much, they'll kick me out of the sandbox at which point I'll either cut out or come back with a new handle... and maybe I already do...

I don't mind when people flame or snark at me... I'll either dispute 'em, slap 'em down or ignore 'em. That's the beauty of the internet... I have complete control over what I see... and with a dynamic IP address and judicious use of proxies, script managers, and cookie managers, people only see what I choose for them to see.

"It has indeed been unreasonably hostile on AN of late" Very true......

I have read this thread and others and would like to address some of your comments/concerns posted in this thread.

Regarding leaders with sage advice......

There are hundreds of members posting sage advice daily. You don't have to look very far to find them. We value the advice and help that many of our members offer.

Regarding wisdom.

Wisdom does not necessarily increase with age. Some acquire wisdom at a very early age. With wisdom should come the ability to think and act to share knowledge, insights, experience, common sense, and constructive criticism in a respectful way.

Regarding nastiness.

"Sadly the new posters are still seeking out threads to spread their nastiness when the wise ones write the truth and offer insight."

"I could understand if someone interprets written word as biting or harsh as you cannot interpret tone of voice. Even sarcasm can be misinterpreted in forums."

Nasty remarks have been noted on both ends of the age spectrum.......from students to senior nurses. With wisdom and respect, this nastiness could be greatly reduced. If you see posts that you think are "nasty", please report them instead of getting into a sparring match. This does nothing but further divide the ranks.....the old members vs. the new members. Let staff decide what needs to be done.

Regarding points and infractions.

"I hope the AN mods are all working together to purge these kinds of posters."

Reports come from everywhere....the new and old alike....even from Guides and Staff. All reports are read and discussed......some are discussed at great length before a decision is made to wait and watch, send a pm for clarification or a reminder of TOS. Points are not usually issued on a first-time infraction unless it is blatant spamming or solicitation.

If a member continues to disregard staff communications and requests, points are issued. We follow a progression with points, depending on the severity of the infraction. We do not discuss staff actions with other members, so you have no way of knowing what has been communicated with anyone other than yourself.

Regarding Community

"AN is a great resource" This is true for all ages and levels of experience. It is a platform where all are welcome to share their thoughts, questions, knowledge without fear of being criticized, laughed at, etc.

"I think we all should just do our best in the interim to keep this place positive, honest and respectful and hope to not catch fire." What a great idea!

"I think both "sides" have been wrong at times." The blame for the negativity cannot be placed all on one side or the other. You cannot control what is posted by others, however you can control how you respond. This should not be a turf war. This site is large enough to accommodate thousands of members.

If you have additional concerns, please feel free to communicate them to me as the Community Manager, or start a thread in the Help Desk.

I think tnbutterfly nailed it. Right now I appreciate the reminder that I can control only how I respond, not what others do. Grrrrr, that can be hard!

What happened? Did the red jello thread derail?

What happened? Did the red jello thread derail?

Not a chance :)

Red Jello is a proportional response to the need for appropriate (ie: TOS-approved) venting outlets!

We're being good, promise :D

As a nursing student doing my registered nursing degree, it makes those of us who actually work hard look bad when students post their questions on here, basically expecting fellow nurses to do their homework for them. If I was to seek help on this site from more experienced nurses, I would at least do my own research first and say "this is what I think, am I on the right track?" Whether it's in response to a homework/student question or just one of the general postings, I enjoy reading the opinions from experienced nurses :-)

Even if you posted I have no idea how to solve this but I know Xx & Yy but Zz is just fluff information/a distractor. Many would jump into help. I saw a thread yesterday where a member asked the poster questions to guide the thought process to the right answer. The poster was not happy to say the least and the statements typed were pretty clear with little room for misinterpretation.

Yes people are stressed. Yes people are frustrated. Yes words & intent (especially sarcasm or dry humor) can be misread/ misinterpreted. But wow, some over the top reactions get posted here and other online sites (FB, message boards..,)

I wanted to let you all know, we've had a confirmed Esme sighting.

There's a confirmed GrnTea sighting over on the blue side as well.

No it doesn't. It only makes them look bad.

Only you can make you look bad.

No more are all students lazy than are all experienced nurses young-eaters.

Each person creates their own reputation... here, at school, and in the workplace.

Glad I saw this, I had just posted on another thread that I missed GRNTEA and Esme, glad they are still here!
