Well where I live it is mandatory if you are accepted into the program. I have just been accepted into a program, and I take my test tomorrow.

Good Luck!!!

I didnt need a drug test but they did make me have a background check.

At my school we didn't have a drug test, but we did have a background check.

Hi, I am in Alabama and we did have to take a drug test before starting. We actually had two days of orientation and on the second day, as we were leaving, the labcorp people were waiting in the hallway for us. You could see if your school has a nursing student handbook and it will probably be in there. Also, as long as you have a prescription you should be okay! Good Luck!

my school did not require a drug test. they did require a full physical, as well as character references, but that's it.

My school here in Texas we had to have a background check, drug test and a full physical health check. All outof our pocket cost.

My school does not require a drug test for admission to the program, but does require one prior to beginning clinicals, as our clinical sites mandate clean drug tests (and clear background checks) for anyone who works there.

My school is having us do a drug test before our program starts as well.

Specializes in Pediatrics, OB/GYN, ER, Geriatrics.

Here in California, my school is having us do a background check and when we start clinical, we have to do a drug test.

I think the schools are doing this more now since a lot of the hospitals are requiring a drug test and background check before starting a rotation. I look at this way though, you have to have a background check to take your NCLEX, so you are basically killing two birds with one stone...

You're going to have to do a drug test sooner or later. If not to get into the school, then before you start clinicals. And even if you don't have to submit one for clinicals, most hospitals & LTCs require one when you get hired. They need to be able to trust you because you will have access to all kinds of meds. You might as well clean it all out of your system now!

5 - 10 panel Drug tests were mandatory for the LPN program I'm in down here in Florida. We also had to have a physical exam, 2 reference letters, a list of vaccines or titers and a background check as well. I guess it depends on the school.
