When did it become ok to put someone down because they are NOT an RN?

Mothers day with the family, everyone was sitting around the table. I chose this opportunity to announce that after 2 years of hard work (pre-reqs and the VN course), that I have not only graduated with honors, but also passed the NCLEX. In the midst of my personal joy and praise (well earned in my opinion), a family member (who is a medical assistant), interrupts everyone and says, “Yea but LVN’s are already phased out” … “No one uses them no more”. The whole room went silent for a few moments and then the topic of conversation changed to vegetable gardens. What happen to my moment? Not to sound shallow, but I wanted my moment!

The biggest kicker, toward the end of the day, he was greatly praised for just the THOUGHT of going to RN school. He said, “Yea, I went to the college the other day and I’m going to sign up for the wait list for the RN program …. Only 2 years and I’m in”. OMG … THERE ARE PRE-REQS!!!! You can’t just sign up and magically get in! And again, what about ME? I am in school FULL TIME for my pre-reqs to the LVN to RN bridge program, while doing the LVN! GRRRRR!

Ok, I just had to vent. Yesterday I was crushed, but today I AM MAD! :angryfire

Sounds as if he's a bit jealous of your achievements, not to mention seriously misinformed about the very strong use of LPN's, with no "phasing out" in sight. He will see reality once he starts taking the prerequisites for his RN. Congratulations to you! If they haven't already, your family will begin to see a change in you from your new profession and realize how important it is. Not to mention all the $$$ you will now be making! ;)

He's gonna be the RN hunting for an aid for 5 minutes because his pt needs the bedpan. LOL

user_online.gif report.gif quote.gifI thought that was very funny.

Well done Gingerbell, and Congratulations!!!:balloons:.

CONGRATS! YOU HAVE WORKED SOOOO HARD TO GET TO WHERE YOUR AT. THERE WILL ALWAYS B SOMEONE TRYING TO BRING YOU DOWN, SO JUST KEEP YOUR HEAD UP ALL DA TIME. I AM SOOO HAPPY 4 U. :yelclap:

I'm so sorry your family member is so ignorant. Let's hope he learns better.

I so well remember 42 years ago graduating from the LVN program. When my name was called my normally quiet Dad said loudly, "Yeah Kathy!". Mom was crying.

I wish your family knew enough to give you your moment but you are a licensed nurse! HURRAY FOR YOU!

Hey, we must be related. One of my BIL's basically said "so you weren't smart enough to get into the RN school?"

I just looked at him and said "Can you assist in saving a life, care for a newborn and hold the hand of the dying? I can and have. By the way what credentials do you have?".

I haven't spoke to the jerk in three years. The benefits of living in another part of the country.

Good luck in your career.

I have had this issue as well, and the regulars on this board will tell you that this is a pet peeve of mine. I entered into an LPN program that just started a bridge to the RN and had to take many of the same pre-requisites the RN students had to take. Got nothing less than Bs in the classes, but I didn't want to become an RN. I am now an LPN and very happy about it, and have no desire to become an RN. I have gotten to the point that I am openly rude to those that question my personal choices. I am not pining to be an RN, not against them or begging for money...therefore, heck, if you can't be happy for me, at least leave me alone. I am proud of you, and all of the people that earned their licenses...LPNs and RNs.

Hi Gingerbell, congrats on passing the NCLEX and unfortunatly welcome to additude that I have recieved from many people the entire time I've been an LPN. Maybe it's the difference in the state I live in, but here LPNs are quite looked down upon. LPN.... Likes to Pretend they're Nurses! Everytime I say I'm a nurse, the first thing I hear is "LPN or RN" when I say LPN they say "Oh.....are you going to go back to school?"

It is ridiculas! Ecspeacialy when you concider I work in long term care and do the EXACT same job as the RNs do. I can appreciate that RNs go to school longer and they deserve to be recognized for it, however, LPNs study the same material. The human body is not different for us. I probally would have gone straight into the RN program if I'd known it would be like this. I've known several RNs who don't seem to know what they are doing and vise versa, it depends on the nurse not the letters at the end of the name.

Not to be mean, but here, in Il. MAs are not even concidered health care proffecionals (excuse my spelling) they are glorified secretaries who can take V.S. I wouldn't take that opinion to heart at all.

Good luck, and in the future just remind yourself that they really don't know what they are talking about. The LPN program was intense and our licenses were hard earned and well deserved!

congrats on your nclex! your a nurse now and be proud of it. oh yeah, i think you should tell that person who shot you down that you have to have all pre reqs finished before signing up for the program. also, lvns have a greater chance of entering the program because lvns go on a SPACE AVAILABLE basis, and lvns are put into the 3rd semester of the program. on the other hand, the one upper still needs to do prereqs, wait the waiting list, no compensation on MA education, and try to get in based on a lottery and GPA is taken into consideration. soooo think of it this way, your pretty much set, you a little more schooling to go, you grad with honors, plus your gonna have experience. congrats again.

I think that what turned me off to being an RN is the politics and the fact that nursing, in general is pissed upon by the entire hospital. Writing care plans that no one really follows, delegating to non-caring staff that have their own agendas and being even more stressed out than I am already. I do the very best that I can to take the stress off of the RNs within my scope of practice; but those that openly do not appreciate me get the bare minimum. I have witnessed RNs placed in compromising positions just because of their title and I didn't want that for myself. Also, I noticed thatthe higher up people go, the more some of them have to compromise their personal principals, because you have to play the game to remain in the running.

Being an LPN allowed me to have access to more learning, taking care of people and being a vital part of the health care team...and I didn't need a degree to tell me that I am valuable. But, the attitudes displayed by some people does get discouraging. I agree, this is part of the deal of being an LPN...not being taken seriously. My response to that is to do the best you can by example. That began to overturn many of the pre-conceived notions people had about LPNs and that, makes me proud.

You know what Gingerbell Im proud of you, I was an Lpn before I became an Rn, I think Lpns are just as important as Rn's, I tell you hes probably just jealous because your a nurse and hes just a medical assistant or should I say medical a$$, lol, you can do more for people then he can, and Ive got news for him hes going to wait along time for that Rn and youll probabley get your Rn before him I would go brag to him because your going to get advanced standing in the Rn program for being an Lpn and hes not going to get any advanced standing they dont give advanced standing for being an Rma or Cma, that and you can already be a bedside nurse at a hospital or Ltc, and Ive noticed a trend there starting to bring the Lpns back because of the nursing shortage Ive noticed alot of hospitals starting to hire them again and a little hint Lpns are better bedside nurses any day then some Rn's I know. My grandfathers hospice nurse was an Lpn the best nurse I know she not only comforted him she comforted me when he died and I really respect Lpns because of her. Be happy you deserve it!
