When did it become ok to put someone down because they are NOT an RN?
Mothers day with the family, everyone was sitting around the table. I chose this opportunity to announce that after 2 years of hard work (pre-reqs and the VN course), that I have not only graduated with honors, but also passed the NCLEX. In the midst of my personal joy and praise (well earned in my opinion), a family member (who is a medical assistant), interrupts everyone and says, “Yea but LVN’s are already phased out” … “No one uses them no more”. The whole room went silent for a few moments and then the topic of conversation changed to vegetable gardens. What happen to my moment? Not to sound shallow, but I wanted my moment!
The biggest kicker, toward the end of the day, he was greatly praised for just the THOUGHT of going to RN school. He said, “Yea, I went to the college the other day and I’m going to sign up for the wait list for the RN program …. Only 2 years and I’m in”. OMG … THERE ARE PRE-REQS!!!! You can’t just sign up and magically get in! And again, what about ME? I am in school FULL TIME for my pre-reqs to the LVN to RN bridge program, while doing the LVN! GRRRRR!
Ok, I just had to vent. Yesterday I was crushed, but today I AM MAD! :angryfire

Gingerbell, CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!!!!!!! Passing with honors AND passing NCLEX --- you are now a NURSE!!!!!!!WOOT WOOT WOOT!!!
I have some kind of idea that LVNs aren't being phased out at all --- in fact, some of my best training has been under the guidance of LVNs, SO . . . TRA LA (music) to you!!!! You should be very proud of yourself and allow us here to have the honor of saluting your moment!!

I am not the type of person who seeks praise or flattery, so I probably would not have announced my completion of the LVN program at a family gathering (unless asked).
Congratulations on your achievements! All of your hard work is paying off.
Anyhow, it seems that your MA family member is secretly envious, because you will earn more money than him with your LVN license. The reality is that many MAs are not paid a whole lot of money these days. I wouldn't worry about this situation too much. Don't allow your family member to rent too much space in your head, because getting to your head was his goal.
aaaaaahahahahahahahaha, I soooo needed that!

You are so right! Normally I'm not the praise seeker either, but I thought that this time I really worked hard, so why not toot my own horn just a little. People did ask, but I was the one who chose to announce it. I know that there is always a risk with putting yourself out there on anything and that your always going to have at least one peron that takes the negative side.
Thank you for the Congrats and I KNOW this will pay off. I LOVE BEING AN LVN. And as far as him renting too much space in my head . . . I'm evicting him right now as I type, lol!
I am so glad I found this board, you guys are all so awesome to each other. I can honestly say that I am proud to be a part of such a respectable and supportive group of people!

Congrats! And your relative would probably be the type to say "you should have been a Doctor" if you announced you had just completed your RN degree.

He was jealous or a social klutz. I'm sorry your moment was ruined. Take comfort in knowing that your friends here appreciate so much and highly esteem a good LVN. Best wishes in your chosen profession. Your patients and coworkers will be the lucky ones.

He has noooo idea how hard you've worked, how could he unless he has been through it? Congratulations and you do deserve your moment. There will be more.
I get that in my family too. It was no big deal when I got my LPN, but now that I'm going to be an RN its a huge deal and everyones impressed. I have come a long way from a difficult, almost impossible situation so it really makes me feel good when others are can appreciate that, but if they can't its okay cause I still can.
Good luck!!!
