And did it have to do with nursing?
I had 3 things I wanted to be: A nurse, a scientist, and a special education teacher. I cannot remember a time in my life where I wanted to be something different.
I'm kind of all 3 :) I did a lot of work with special needs people as a nurse. The scientist part comes through with using your nursing judgement and trying to put the pieces together with the Dr. to make a clear diagnosis :) Also, I am attaining my degrees in Psychology and Sociology... social sciences...
A lot of nurses I speak with have wanted to be a nurse, teacher, or vet... So, I'm interested: What did you want to be (who knows, maybe I'll do a research paper on it... LOL)?

I always liked science and wanted to be "in medicine" in some capacity. I wanted to be a vet because i love pets. My family said they wouldn't help me with school for that, so I wanted to be a vet tech (just 2 years of community college). Family said if I did that, they'd disown me (they didn't consider that job "good enough"). So I did what they wanted me to do for a few years, was miserable, and finally saved up enough money to get myself to nursing school and do what I wanted to do.
Lol...Mind if I ask, what do they want you to do?. I'm in the same situation, my dad want me to be a doctor. I had to promise him after nursing school, I'll go to med school.
Strangely enough, I've always wanted to go to law school but don't want to be a lawyer. Oh, well, not spending money on it now. Maybe if I get a free coupon or something.
Actually, I have a bunch of personal friends who have done this... I think once I finish my Doctorate, I may as well... I think it is for those who are high achievers (admittedly or not), because everyone says a Juris Doctorate is the most intense, most frustrating degree you can ever attain... And one, that if you love Philosophy, is almost a given :) So, go for it if you are able... Every single person I know says be prepared to be reduced to tears at least once. LOL
As a child I wanted to be a teacher because my parents are teachers (and I thought they were and still are the smartest people I ever met). Then as a teen, I wanted to be a journalist and an anchorwoman on TV.
Nursing was just happenstance, I still hope to teach someday after I get my Masters.
I might add that now I'm an adult, nurse and a devoted fan of SVU (Law&Order), I would like to be a Forensic nurse, I'm fascinated by forensics and all the good that it does. I also contemplated joining the Navy at some point (love JAG, NCIS, lol) but can't now because DH does not like the idea.
I just remembered at age 5, I wanted to be President.. MY grandfather told my mother if ever there was a "woman" President I might be the one as I was a "tour director/planner/bossy" type kid at 5. Always making sure things were done and where they belonged.
I always wanted to own a gift store and once I did for about 1 1/2 yrs called "The Pot of Gold". Loved every min but was in a tiny town and many many moons ahead of my time.Besides commercial gifts, I taught myself how to do balloons and got a machine where you put the gift in the balloon, and I had local crafters put consignment items in my store, WE had a farm room with animals made and dressed up, we had painting and painting on large mushrooms or saw blades. All the stuff was so neat, I wanted to take it all home! This was back in 1993 and my 28 year old son met a guy on his job recnetly who lives in that tiny town and remembered our store!
When I went to college after divorce under a county program, I did real well in science and that teacher talked me into nursing. When I told my mom I was going be a nurse, her initial reaction was "Whatever for?" But she changed her mind real fast and was supportive.

Top gun came out when I was three so a fighter pilot of course:cool:. My mom was a nurse and I grew up visiting her in the ed and it always seemed like nurses were so smart and nice and Ive had the opportunity to meet some great male nurses so I never grew up thinking it was just a womens job so Ive wanted to be a nurse for as long as I can remember. It just took me awhile to pull my head out of my butt and go back to school but i start ns this fall and I have never felt better about anything.
