What type of lifestyle can a nurse afford?

Published

once I become an RN, I will be stable financially but there is one thing that I want really bad and its a nosejob. Can the salary of an RN afford it??

Lol. Good for you. I'm getting a mommy makeover (tummy tuck, breast lift, lipo) in Jan after graduation from NP school. My surgeon is giving me a 15% professional courtesy discount. He offered to waive his fee (leaving only the OR and anesthesia fees) if I would do before and after photos, but I'm not willing to do that. You may have such an opportunity OP, ask about.

Really? I would have jumped all over that fee waiving. I'm sure the before and after photos could be done without a head shot included.

Nah, just not for me. If it was the only way I could afford it, I guess I might consider it. That isn't the case, so I see no reason to essentially sell nakie pictures of myself. ;) I guess at my age I should just be pleased to have such an offer!

Who are you to say what someone's priorities "should" be? She wants to know if she'll make a decent living and be able to afford what she wants. If she said a new car or a house instead of a nose job would you say the same thing? She never said she wanted to be a nurse solely to afford a nose job.

I just think that if one wants to become a nurse (profession of caring the last time I checked) they should better motives that the finances for plastic surgeries.I'm not trying to say that plastic surgeries are bad (sometimes they can change person life for better;give them more confidence).

I don't concern myself with the motives of people who enter this profession. If someone wants to earn more money and avail himself/herself of a nose job, it's fine with me if they use nursing as a vehicle to get there. Live and let live...

You can be the most caring nurse in the world, but the reality is that caring and passion don't pay the bills. Most of us need the cash.

I can't imagine anyone enduring the stresses and challenges of nursing school solely to afford cosmetic surgery.

I also can't imagine we'd be questioning the motives of a plumber or a teacher or an airline pilot or a trapeze artist who wanted to have a nose job.

Nurses are allowed to put themselves on the list of those they care for.

I'll defintely be single when I graduate. Right now, I have a used car and I only pay my car insurance.

Well if thats the ONLY bill you have then you can afford anything!

I on the other hand make great money, however, i am a single mom, pay a mortgage, pay for college for my daughter, and hmm i think I have about 12 other bills......

I'm contemplating whether I can afford to join a gym....

I wish I could send my bills onto Bill and get him to pay them!

If u have study debts to pay off, plus all ur other living expenses, then no, being a nurse means u can't have a lavish lifestyle. I just can't wait till my study is finally paid, & I can actually go clothes or food shopping without having to add it all up in my head.

Ahhh, dreams...!

So you aren't caring if you want plastic surgery? I think salary is an important consideration whenever you take a job or go to school for something. Nothing wrong with that at all. Who wants to work for free or for just a small amount of money, especially when you consider the work behind school and the responsibility behind the job? We should be paid well for what we do!

Exactly. Teachers in my area get plastic surgery covered under insurance as part of their contract. No one is jumping on them saying the only reason they go through years of school is to get surgery or aren't caring because they want surgery.

But off course at least they could take the summer off to recover from the surgery. :D
