What type of lifestyle can a nurse afford?

once I become an RN, I will be stable financially but there is one thing that I want really bad and its a nosejob. Can the salary of an RN afford it??

I beg to differ. Her priority questions should be how to survive nursing school or our there any jobs out there for new grads.

Who are you to say what someone's priorities "should" be? She wants to know if she'll make a decent living and be able to afford what she wants. If she said a new car or a house instead of a nose job would you say the same thing? She never said she wanted to be a nurse solely to afford a nose job.

I seriously doubt OP is becoming a nurse solely to pay for a nose job!

:lol2: Oh dear.. you may be surprised what some people's personal motivators are for going to nursing school. I lost my doubt a long time ago... sometimes I miss it.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet, unless I missed it in my skimming, is the *difference* in your current lifestyle vs. your future.

If, like most, you are *struggling* financially during your nursing education, that first paycheck will make you feel Rich! So be smart and continue to live modestly, and rather than putting things on credit or spending all your new-found money, sock most of it away in different piles, envelopes, accounts, etc. designed to hold money for each specific desire you have.

You can certainly afford it if you spend and save your money well. Find out the average wage in your area and put it through paycheckcity.com. I use x36 hrs/week just for estimating purposes. Then, type in "monthly budget calculator" in google and click on the link from ClearCounselingCredit I think the site is called, it's my favorite one since it basically covers most of what your monthly payments will be from rent, car, food and miscellaneous things. I do this a lot actually :) just to see what kind of life I can live if I decide to stay in my area or have to move to find my first job.

I also admit that I started out "budgeting" half the monthly pay I would make in my area towards clothes/bags/cosmetic procedures that I want in the future but now my sights are set on having that money for a wedding and house. But even if my priorities stayed the same, I see no shame in it. I'm not becoming a nurse just to buy a handbag but if I can budget well to be able to get it, that's my business.

I know a lot of nurses that get the ladies redone, a little "pick-me-up" if you will. So, depending on the price difference, there's your answer.

Personally, I'm going for pec implants. I would rather spend my free time working OT than at the gym. I think it'll even itself out over the long haul.

Question: If a guy gets pec implants is it still considered a boob job?

Some plastic surgeons take payments-that may be a an option for you. Also as a new RN you may not have enough built up paid time off for a while or won't be able to take any for 3-6 months after you start. Get a consult and see if the payment plan is an option, how much recovery time you would need-PTO (tough caring for patients when you have 2 black eyes).

Don't forget, you will be friends with doctors...who know doctors. Chances are you can find a plastic surgeon who will do the operation at a discount...bingo.

I bought boobs 4 months into my first job.

Lol. Good for you. I'm getting a mommy makeover (tummy tuck, breast lift, lipo) in Jan after graduation from NP school. My surgeon is giving me a 15% professional courtesy discount. He offered to waive his fee (leaving only the OR and anesthesia fees) if I would do before and after photos, but I'm not willing to do that. You may have such an opportunity OP, ask about.

That said, I'd say the answer to the question in the OP depends on what other income you have in the house. I couldn't afford a mommy makeover if I had to support myself. My income is just that, my money for me to spend on myself (or family, etc). Without my spouse's income, I don't think I'd be living very well. 60K doesn't buy a lot of luxuries, and that is probably the most I'll ever earn.

Sometimes it's not about how much you make...but what you have to do with that money.

If you are debt free..a nose job should not be a problem for an RN.

It depends on if you can find a job as an RN to start- then how much will your student loans be per month? If you have $100,000 in debt from student loans, I see the nose job waiting, especially if you have trouble finding a job. Will you be single with kids, or married/partnered to someone who makes a decent amount to split bills with? Will you be paying on a brand new car, or driving a paid off used car? There is so much to factor in.

I'll defintely be single when I graduate. Right now, I have a used car and I only pay my car insurance.

If I may ask, will you become an RN if it you will not make enough money to get a nose job?

No, it's not. I've been wanting one for a long time now, but never had a job where I made enough to get it done

Really? I would have jumped all over that fee waiving. I'm sure the before and after photos could be done without a head shot included.
