What do you think about male nurses going into pediatrics?

Published

Recently started my clinical rotation in the med imaging department in a children hospital and I absolutely love it. I love to participate in different procedures, to see the human systems through the screen and most of all I just love interacting with babies!

So would others think that this is pedophillia? Or does it make me a creepy weirdo?

What the.....pedophilia? Is this question serious?

By the way, your profile says you are female, so which is it?

I don't think any concerned parent would see this as pedophilia! They would be thankful that you are helping their child through a tough time in their life. Pediatrics is an honorable specialty, just like any other.

Are male pediatricians pedophiles, then? That's the conclusion, if you use that same logic.

If peds appeals to you, go for it!

Obviously Johnson and Johnson didn't see a problem with it. Their "Campaign for Nursing Future" Pediatric Nurse video uses a male pediatric oncology nurse.

This question is silly.

The fact that you would even compare pediatric nursing as a male and pedophilia makes me seriously question the validity of your post, If I am incorrect, then I have no words.

Unfortunately, I know a few people who would distrust a male peds nurse. The world is a messed up place...but if that's what you want to do, go for it. Don't let that horrible misconception hold you back.

Funny thing is that the world would be a better place if kids had MORE access to strong male role models who were actually interested in their well-being. More men working with kids in health and education related fields is important. The world is only messed up because we've let it become that way. You are 100% correct in telling him to not let misconceptions hold him back.

If you've read any of my posts before, I'm a neonatal ICU/nursery/lactation/soon to be LDRP nurse/someday will be a CNM and I am 100% male...and I'm awesome.

I am not a peds nurse by specialty, but I have taken care of pediatric patients and am often requested since I am fun and communicate well with children (I have a lot of younger siblings). There is nothing wrong with a male nurse becoming a pediatric nurse, and no doubt you can become one of the best pediatric nurses if you work hard and put your patient's first. Kids are awesome and parents will think nothing of having a male nurse, or at least they shouldn't.

If you have to ask the question the way that you present it perhaps you should play it safe and stay away from peds.
