What specialty are you considering?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I feel like I learn of a new specialty every day-- I know some who's personal experiences draw them to a particular area of focus, but my top choices, I think are more related to my personality: Radiology, ICU, Med/Surg, and Cardiac all make the top of my list for their technical and critical demands.

Thank you sjtrk! For some reason, it won't let me quote your post.

Specializes in Forensic Psych.

People ask me this all the time and I really have no idea. I've thought about psych, oncology, or dialysis, but I'd be happy with med/Surg or ICU for the experience.

I know it's a much maligned opinion, but I didn't like my time in a nursing home at all and I have no desire to go back there. Other than that, I'm open to seeing what I enjoy in clincals!

Specializes in OR.

Like Halcyonn, my hope is to just be employed. My mind is open, and I'm waiting to go through clinicals to see where I might find my niche.

Specializes in Labor and Delivery.

I want to end up as a labor nurse. That's where I work now and my hospital has an extern program that allows for 1 extern in my department per year.

I'm also very open to learning about new things. I have started floating to other departments because I know that I needed to break out of my comfort zone.

I guess at the end of the day I just want a job and I will try to my best to learn and grow in any department.

Hello all, I am nursing student in second semester. Any tips for pursuing career in cardiology nursing. I usually think of ER or telementary but can someone suggest ways in terms of making resume better like acls certification? What do hospitals look for in candidates???

Specializes in LTC and School Health.
I hope to be employed.

Seriously...

I don't really care what 'specialty' I'm in. As long as I can find a job after graduation, I'll be happy!

This was my attitude. As a new grad RN I was elated to get offered ICU.

Specializes in Certified Med/Surg tele, and other stuff.

Right now I'm certified in Med/Surg and like it. We have a lot of cardiology as well.

I think if I left my place of employment I would like to work in interventional radiology.

I am in my second year of LPN school. My goal is to get into the emergency room. I worked many years as a CNA in an ER and just loved the fast passed environment. Never knowing whats going to come in next.

Specializes in ICU.

My first choice in psychiatric nursing. But, I think I would also like: geriatric psychiatric, neuro, oncology, med/surg.

I'll take just about anything, as it's been a fruitless search so far. The above are the fields that interest me most, though.

Specializes in CMSRN, hospice.

Haha, I picked nursing so I could jump around between specialties and not choose anything!

Seriously, though, I appreciate the variety of the career, and I can see myself trying a few different things before finding my niche. I have to say the only thing I don't see myself doing is L & D. I think my ultimate dream would be to go into forensic nursing, but we'll see where I go along the way.

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

I have no clue. I'm a GVN now and working in LTC psych.

It's fun. I'd never work in a regular nursing home.

For specialities?

- ER

- Psych

- LTC

- Dialysis. I like the autonomy of 'acutes' dialysis. I just don't like 1x1's...because I can't stay awake for them. 1x1's are a necessary evil. I figure. At clinicals once, I was pulled into the room to do 1x1's.

They tried to keep me in there all. Freaking. Day.

My instructor had to come rescue me.

The bloom was really off the rose for me as far as hospital clinicals are concerned. 'Clincals is what you make of it'...ha!

I'd like some time in the ICU or Med Surg as well. Not so much because I want to be there as I figure the exp would improve my skills a great deal. Plus, it creates more options.

I could've been working in one of the military hospitals, but..I did not follow up with my contact. I don't know. I spent a good decade or so in the military. It's like a bad marriage and it's too soon for a reconcilliation. LOL

I'm in no real rush to be in the hospital, though I miss the environment. I figure that there's plenty of time to get into one when I get my RN.

I have a few career paths in mind. I think it's just good at this point to keep my options open. Whatever I end up doing, I just want to be good at it and happy to do my job.

Varies

Right now I'm working on my BsN but in Maryland, there is a program that you can take MS wise. If you take that program, it is a hybrid of Acute care nurse practitioner / Critical care clinical nurse specialist. Once taken, you are allowed to sit to take the exams whether NP or CNS wise.
