What specialty are you considering?

I feel like I learn of a new specialty every day-- I know some who's personal experiences draw them to a particular area of focus, but my top choices, I think are more related to my personality: Radiology, ICU, Med/Surg, and Cardiac all make the top of my list for their technical and critical demands.

Pediatrics--I currently work with kids (not medical related) and could very much see myself enjoy working with them just as much in a medical setting. I have considered how much harder it might be to see unhealthy and helpless children fighting for their lives, the job is tough no matter what specialty you undertake, and someone has to do it! I see myself having the patience to work in that field. Even now, when I walk around with my first aid kit and bandage simple "boo boos," apply ice to bruises, tissues to nose bleeds, and take temperatures, I find helping the children with the healing process and comforting them when they are scared just as rewarding as teaching them something new.

One of the highlights of my job was when a five year old student of mine was frantic because she had eaten fish or some "bony" meat for lunch earlier, and the teachers at her school/school nurse did not do anything for her. She would not stop crying and was so scared that she was going "to die." I asked her if she drank water, and she said, "yes, all day they keep telling me to drink water, but it don't work!!" So we had peanut butter sandwiches for snack, and I told her to eat one and the bread/peanut butter will help move whatever was stuck in her throat to her stomach. She ate it, and was overjoyed at the results. She gave me the biggest hug, and said, "I love you so much!!! You saved me!" Lol I realize not all sick children will immediately show gratitude for the medical professionals in their lives, but just knowing you helped them is enough--the recognition does not matter, but it reminds you why you chose to do it in the first place. =) good luck to you in choosing your specialty.

I wish I knew! I feel like I change my mind every other day. One day I can see myself working with geriatrics, the next with kids or even neonates. One specialty I just can't see myself going into in psychiatric. Maybe one day I will feel experience and confident enough, but as of right now I don't think it's for me. One of my goals is to be able to get over those nerves...

Specializes in Oncology/hematology.

Being that I haven't started school yet, my hope is hospice care with oncology as my lead in. However, I'm open to anything at all. I just want to work. I know that I want to work in a hospital setting, but will use my clinicals to get a better feel for what fits me. I get to start my first semester in oncology, which is perfect.

I hope to get into labor and delivery, but my ultimate goal is NICU.

I was born extremely early, and faced many problems as I spent the first 3 1/2 months of my life in the NICU. I hope to inspire parents, and let them know that there is hope for their child to live a normal, healthy life after struggles.

I think that is so awesome of you! I know if I was ever in a situation where my child was in the NICU it would help me to have a nurse like you!

My dream is to be in OB, either at a hospital or at a birthing center. I don't mind starting anywhere, I just want to be a nurse but my dream since 12 has always been to work at Vanderbilt in their high risk OB unit. One day maybe but for now, i'll be happy just to help anyone. : )

I would choose geriatric or nursing education. I love working with the elderly and currently am employed as a caregiver from a woman with early onset Alzheimer's. But I think I want to get my master's in nursing education to work part time as a nursing professor, most likely teaching classes online. After applying to nursing schools, I see the need for more professors. So I would love to be one!

Wow, radiology is difficult I heard. You have to be good in math. But I want to be either a DON or an NP

My mind changes everyday! I wouldn't mind doing geriatrics, ICU, or Rehab. I could end up in Med/Surg :).

I don't really care what 'specialty' I'm in. As long as I can find a job after graduation, I'll be happy!
