    UTEP MSN nursing education

Hello, I see this thread is about two years old. I applied and got in back in 2016. I took one semester off for health issues, and I just graduated May 2018. It was a great program
  2. No, you should not postpone nursing school.

Average amount of call time for OR nurses?

It depends on the OR. I work in a non trauma OR so we do 2 days a month. I sign up for three so that I wont ever get placed in an open slot. So, thats ! weekend and 1 week day. So, about 24 hours in a month. I would say you would need about 1 year to get familiar with all specialties.

    ER to OR

I made the move about three years ago from ER to OR. I dont love it but it works for me at the moment. I miss using my skills. I didnt become a nurse to just chart, position, and answer the doctor's phones.

How to transition from OR nursing to the floor?

I did LTC, Hospice, Home Health, and ER before I went to the OR. After 3 years I am bored but I have no idea where I want to go. I am currently getting my MSN and I dont have to think hard nor am I under pressure. I do miss my skills and I am thinking about going back to ER, ICU and maybe PACU.

    Northside Hospital Atlanta

Sadly you wont learn scrub experience at Northside. Wellstar, Emory and possibly Grady will teach scrubbing.

    Florida versus Georgia Pay

Georgia is a low paying state as well. New grads could get anywhere from 18/hr for a rural hospital to 22-26/hr for a city hospital.

    Job Hopper

What about trying a different setting. They have Hospice, Home Health and the pay is better and normally you can make your own schedule. Also what about a doctor's office or clinic?

    OR call schedule

We dont have a large OR. Most nurses work 7-3 or 7-7. We have a few other shifts like 9-5, 11-7, 11-11, and 7p-7a. We day shifters take one weekday call of 11-7 and One weekend call your choice 7-3, 3-11, or 11-7. We have a CVOR team and they do their own call and we do have some nurses from another OR floor but they mostly deal with gyn so they cant really help with other specialties.

    struggling in orientation

Your skills will come in time. You know a lot more than you think you do. I have been in the OR for 18 months, with many of those months totally on my own and doing procedures I never done on my own. I guess they saw nothing scared me because I came from the ER. Truthfully I am bored out of my mind and cant want to do something else. but I signed a 2 year contract. Its a different type of nursing and I prefer to use more skills. I did my preceptor-ship in the OR and it did not prepare me for ST bullying, Nurse tattling. I fear losing all my skills and knowledge of procedures and medications. Being one of the highest paid specialties is what keeps me around, but not for long. I am also in grad school.

    Specialities in the Operating Room...

I am not on a team and I told my job I don't want to be. I do it all, I might go from general to ortho to neuro to cysto in one day. I don't see how some nurses like seeing the same thing day in and day out. I get bored really quick. My floor has: ortho, neuro, cysto, general, some plastics, robots, rare gyn, breasts, and l and d cases. ENT and bari cases were moved we are supposed to start doing livers. We have a floor specially for breast, one specifically for gyn. Across the street is outpatient cases. My facility is huge and has a place for everything. CVOR is on my floor but they have their own team and so does the eyes. WE dont get to scrub just circulate.
