Lately, there have been some things at work that, as a nurse, I never thought I'd have to say to my colleagues.

A few things that stand out:

"Please don't walk barefoot in the hallway"

"If you need to apply lotion to your feet, please leave the nurse's station to do so"

"Please avoid printing out entire 300 page textbooks using the work printer"

How about you? What are some things you never thought you'd have to say to coworkers?

About taking vitals...At my  rehab facility, orders are to take vitals BID. Day and evening shift take them.

Some night shift nurses do not do them. Reasons given to me where that they only have orders for BID

I do see some night nurses write "Vitals not taken, patient sleeping".

I guess technically that is BID. Twice a day.  Wonder what would happen if evening shift did not do them.  What time does night shift start? Do they actually want them TID?

Just trying to understand.

I had to explain what "dwelling time" meant in an enema order to a nurse (with 10 years of experience); after she reported to me not seeing any results right after she administered  a lactulose enema...

Night shift is 11pm-7am

Im not sure what would happen if the previous shifts missed them

How about, " Please turn down your music, the patients are trying to sleep."

Please do not uncap the flush and hold it in your mouth to flush the patient's PICC line after you have administered her IV push antibiotic.image.png.796419fafe38fb91831bb4fc7cfb0ac2.png

I’ve seen a nurse with 45 years’ experience do that. I was horrified, but as a brand-new nurse I was too intimidated to confront her about it. So I took the coward’s way out and told our supervisor, who I’m assuming did talk to her because I never saw her do it again. Now, of course, I would have ZERO qualms about approaching her no matter how long she’d been a nurse. Too soon old, too late smart!

Once, to a new nurse.

If you find your patient unresponsive, your first action should NOT be to come look for me. ???

Please don't stick the IV needle in the patient's mattress after you have started the IV. This was a nurse with years and years' experience.

If you need 9 pills to get the right dose . . . you don't have the right dose.

Unless your pharmacy only has dose of methadone available and your patient has a confirmed super high dose that he gets at the methadone clinic when he isn’t in admitted for complications from his alternate drug of choice….questioned the dose THREE TIMES because he got the whole pixis card for his dose! It was correct. No idea how someone could have that high of a tolerance and be lucid.

I was thinking this too! Have definitely given some larger amounts of Methadone this way...always to people who can't or won't take more than one at a time, LOL.

True, that. There are some exceptions.
