Without fail... it's *always* move to the right, lean against the side wall, closer to the front. I've realized I do this subconsciously every single time I get on (and have enough room to decide).
I wonder if this can be studied and psychoanalyzed. :)
I work in a very large urban hospital. I speak of off-peak situations when there's actually a choice where to stand and I'm not up close and personal with somebody else's neck hairs.
On the flip side.. peak hours can be interesting. I once experienced this little ol' lady literally body slam my friend into the wall in an attempt to squeeze into the elevator.
Hardly elevator etiquette, but I laughed so hard, my side hurt.
i get on, push my button and then stand on the right side near the back. what really irks me is folks who will get on the elevator after me, not carrying anything and immediately go to the side opposite the buttons and say "six please" without looking at me. i tend to be "deaf". if someone isn't capable of pushing the buttons (carrying stuff, on crutches, whatever) i don't mind pushing it for them, but i'm not the elevator man and if you're capable of pushing the danged button for yourself, do so!

Hadn't really thought about it...but I guess I tend to stand more towards the front...regardless of size. But, if I'm with someone I know, I'd rather just be near them, versus across from them in a crowded elevator. Outside of that, I do notice that I tend to repeatedly jab the close door button....as if me doing that will cause the elevator to become like the Highspeed at the sears tower! (BTW, anyone hear they may be changing the name? Something about if the US olympic committee decides to move in.) ;(
