For me, nothing is more satisfying that bridling an NG tube or deep suctioning a bunch of sputum out of someone.

My personal nursing 'joy' transpires after my shift has ended, at the approximate time I walk across the parking lot to get into my vehicle to drive home.

This will sound really weird but for those of you who know horses, that moment when they let out a deep sigh and lick their lips?
The human equivalent of easing anxiety, over anything... but without licking their lips.
I also like wound debridement when, it's like a new haircut.

I love it when 3-4 other nurses have attempted IV's and ask me if I want to give it a shot. So I go into the room and first stick, I get it. Heck yes!!!
Or when the patient states; "I'm a really hard stick."
I say; "1,2,3, big stick".
The patient; "Did you stick me?"
Me; "Yup, I'm done. Got the IV in and all your labs."
I love it
I'm not telling you it's going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it.

All of the above mentioned. I love when I can get my vented, deconditioned ICU patient out of bed into a chair with all their tubes and wires organized.

When one of my post hip surgery patients can get up with a walker to use the toilet. They are so proud. Getting the Foley out is a happy day too.

I seriously miss bed baths...giving them, not receiving them. LOL In primary nursing, I use to give bedbaths and massages and that was my favorite part.

Starting the shift with a whole list of meds and treatments to give, tests that pts need to be sent off the floor for, phones calls to answer, doctors to page to get orders, ect. Basically controlled chaos. If, at the end of the day, I feel like the pts have gotten good care, despite the craziness of the day, I get a feeling of real satisfaction. That's what keeps me coming back. If I get too many days where I don't get my "psychic reward," it's time to look for a new job.
