This question was posted on our allnurses.com facebook page. I thought it was a great question and that we should post in on AN as well. Looking forward to your responses :)
My favorite thing is a big hug and someone telling me that they can tell I love my job and truly care for my residents. Or when residents themselves hug me and tell me they love me:heartbeat:heartbeat. There is no greater feeling I know as far as job satisfaction. :redbeathe:redbeathe:nurse:
THAT'S a big 10-4! I can live on a compliment like that for weeks......far better than chocolate which lives on my butt forever.
We can't accept gifts as individuals, but we can as a unit or a hospital. I think it would be super killer if someone sometime got us one of those industrial Keurig coffee makers. Our ER, Docs, residents, and central supply all have one...but none in the ICU. They make great coffee and they limit waste by only making it a cup at a time.
Man, that would be sweet.
pre-packaged food for the unit to share. Like, boxed chocolates, bagel baskets, fruit baskets, etc. There is no wondering about the sanitary conditions of the home then, so it actually gets eaten. Or if you know the family well, home made cookies, cakes, etc. :redpinkhe It is nice to be thought of.
Did you mean from my own family? I'm not a nurse yet, but I would like a stethoscope for my CNA class, a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble or Amazon so I can buy some nursing books, and a second pair of New Balance tennis shoes with inserts since they are the only thing that helps my plantar fasciitis.
I have a coworker who let a patient buy her a house. Technically this is against the rules, but no one obeys the rules where I work, lol. The irony of this situation to the rest of us is that she almost killed him and he thinks she saved his life. Nope, she only corrected her own error in the nick of time.

Definitely the best gift is recognition - thank you's, high marks on surveys, and letters that go to the brass.
