What is the longest time you have stayed in one position, where was it, and how long are you planning to stay in the position you are in now?
I have been a school nurse for 16 years! I'm debating on changing it up. I love the schedule more than the job. I've also done med-surg, oncology, L&D, OR, and home health. Those all lasted anywhere from 4 months to a year. My favorite was L&D.
I was just curious. No reason other than that. :) I love the hospital environment BUT I always seem to get stressed out and overwhelmed from all the short staffing. I love the fact there is such a variety of options as nurses!
12 hours in coach, international flight. Talk about your cramped seating!
I've spent the last 22 years in the same ER, although it has been extensively reconstructed a couple of times... first 15 years of nursing I moved around a lot, finally settled down. Had a (much younger!) coworker look at me with concern once, and exclaim, "but when are you going to retire?". Well.... SS won't kick in for another 7 years unless I take the much smaller monthly amount, which I don't think I can afford.
Been with allnurses.com since 2000 in various capacities.
Once my husband retired from the Air Force in 1995:
10 years at one hospital, then became an APRN and have been in this position for 12.5 years
Not a job hopper by any means. However, when we were both active duty we moved every two years whether we needed to or not.
I was at my first hospital for 8 years - I spent my first year as a new grad in PICU and then moved to another floor for the remaining 7 years. I had every intention of staying there my whole career originally, but life happens. Since then I've moved out of state every 2 years (not necessarily intentionally, just has worked out like that) and have realized that I got very little financial benefit/incentive for staying in a position for too long. Loyalty does not pay in healthcare, unfortunately.
I've moved around a lot. Been a nurse for 15 years. Had my first job as an
RN for three years. Worked at that hospital for 7 years, altogether. Since
that job I've had about, 8-9 other nursing jobs.
I've now been at my current job for 2.5 years and do not intend on
leaving this job until my son graduates high school. That's in 7
years. Seems like a long time, and it is... but I like this job, and
I'm just trying to live day to day. And, I'm tired of moving
around.
When my son, who is my youngest, graduates HS and does
whatever after that... goes to college or gets a job... I'm going
to change things up again. Might do travel nursing. Might
drive a truck. Might drive a school bus. Don't know!

I've bounced around every few years, but I worked with one nurse who worked in the same unit from the time she graduated at 21 until she retired in her 70s! She started when it was an old-school nursery (i.e. all of the babies in bassinets facing the big window) and stayed on the unit over the decdes as it became a bonafide NICU.
