What kind of car do you drive for those 1+ hour commutes?

I'm starting my first GN job in August and my commute is around an hour with traffic. I have a beater car now that clunks, squeals, clicks, and randomly dies but gets upwards of 33 mpg. I'm looking to buy a new car once I get some cash in my pocket. What do you all drive/recommend for that LONG commute?

TIA

I bought a brand new Honda Civic last year! Commute 50 minutes to work, and I love my car. Not just for the gas mileage, but it is a really cute car! :)

Volkswagen Golf City 2008. I get 750 km on one tank of gas... gas here is 1.15 per liter.. works out to about 45-50 $ to fill my tank.

FANTASTIC!

1995 one ton dually truck, 5 speed, no AC, 328 thousand miles on it, paint falling off

I park out of the way because I am embarresed to be seen in it

My husband and I live 165 miles apart plus I drive 200-300 miles/week for work:

Hubby: 06 Toyota Prius - 80k miles 50mpg

Me: 10 Toyota Highlander - 20k miles - 23mpg

I drive a 2008 Toyota Yaris. My commute round-trip is about 45 miles (including about 1 hr 40 minutes travel time). I usually fill up the tank once a week and on average it costs about $35. The past couple of weeks, though, I have been taking the commuter rail. I'm just really sick of sitting in traffic every day!

I highly recommend the Yaris. I've had it for over 3 years now and have put about 35000 miles on it with no major problems to speak of. I had it serviced last year (covered under warranty) for something very minor; to be honest I forget what the problem was.

It's compact and can fit nicely into almost any parking space. It's quite different looking, but I like it! I highly recommend it!

Good luck in your hunt for a new car!

My mom has a little under an hour drive to work and she has a toyota yaris. She actually has the 2-door, and it is still very roomy, I can only imagine the 4-door sedan (I think they also have a 5-door hatchback) is just as roomy. It is great on gas and it isn't too bad of a price if you're buying brand new.

I just posted but then saw this. I definitely agree. I have the 4-door sedan and it is quite spacious.

When I did commute in Oregon I had an SUV; a Toyota 4-runner. It was great and I put in a sound system that was fantastic. Need good sounds for the commute.

I can't argue with toyotas & hondas for general reliability. Just for something different though. . . My husband used to have a beelte TDI (diesel) standard transmission and it got right at 50mpg. They haven't put out a diesel model for a couple of years as they transition to a "clean diesel" model, but they do have their Jetta TDI out already (30/42 mpg).

I have my eyes set on a VW BUG:redpinkhe:redpinkhe

the 2012 Civic is nice and can get up to 46 miles per gallon! I still have a 94 corolla with 260,300 miles but I've got my eye on that Civic!

I have a 2005 Ford Mustang V8 A week after I bought it I found out I had gotten into school a 2 hr drive away. The Mustang averages 16-18 mpg so this is gonna suck, but I have no regrets, it's a sweet ride!!

I don't drive to work but I have driven my 2010 honda fit across country 2 times and it averages 33-40mpg on the highway.
