What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?

I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.

I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???

Nobody has mentioned this but I love the shape-ups. They aren't the most attractive, but I am an overweight woman that needs a lot of cushion under my feet for long days. Just wanted to throw that out there.

These 70 pages have a LOT of information. I feel SO prepared for school starting on August 15th!

So far I've got littman stetoscope, a few pairs of scrubs,

good shoes (Merrill's), lots of office supplies, a pda (such as an itouch?), and maybe I'll cave in and buy a rollie-backpack ha ha :coollook:

  • multi colour pen(s) - cuts down on the stuff u have to carry. you need black & red for clinical. could be useful for class notes too.
  • small notebook that could fit in your scrub pocket - wrote down all new info during clinicals so that you don't ask the same q multiple times - even if you think you can commit it to memory - its better to jot it down. don't have to be paragraphs - point form notes or sentence here and there about new tests, meds, diseases, policies, procedures, tips, tricks, contact info etc.

I paid $11 for kinkos to debind and drill holes in three very large nursing books. I carry all of the chapters for the next test around with me, so that I can read up whenever I want, plus I have all of the notes with me. It all fits in a 1.5 inch binder-very light.

I have always done this with all my other classes: anatomy, microorganisms etc. I absolutely LOVE doing this!

Things I have heard from friends:

  1. a 3" binder per class to keep powerpoints in
  2. smaller folders to keep schedules, syllabi, loose leaf paper, extra care plans, and graded care plans in
  3. folders to turn in care plans and such
  4. black clicky pens
  5. red clicky pens
  6. lots of highlighters
  7. lots of flashcards
  8. quick study guides (RNnotes)
  9. rolling backpack
  10. nclex review book
  11. black sharpie
  12. pocket calculator
  13. clipboard
  14. under shirts
  15. stethoscope
  16. pencils for tests
  17. post-its
  18. post-it flags
  19. calender with monthly and weekly agendas
  20. spiral notebooks for class notes (or can write on power points)
  21. dividers
  22. smaller binders to hold the power points just for that unit
  23. small stapler
  24. and of course all the required clinical supplies

PS. I've also heard a crate that holds file folders is beneficial to hold all graded materials, extra copies of care plans, etc.

  33. pocket protector/pouch for your pens, scissors, tape etc (keep supplies neat and on hand - protect from pen leaks!)
