What are the item(s) you need most for nursing school?

Nursing Students General Students

I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.

I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???

Thanks for your input!

Instead of an iPhone.. why not get the iPod Touch.. you can download apps as well without having to pay the extra monthly data fees. As in regards to laptops, any new one will do. The new ones are pretty good and fairly inexpensive right now. I got my HP 2 years ago for only $550 and it is still running good. Do not buy Dell... they usually crash right after the 1 year warranty expires. I heard Toshiba's are really good too and you can get them at best buy for around $350.

I have a Toshiba and love it!!

Instead of using a bunch of folders I use one of those big accordion-style files. They're really helpful for keeping all of your papers organized, I've used them since high school. Couldn't live without 'em.

Well i only have a few things left to buy, a mini stapler, a desk/chair, and a stethoscope...geesh nursing school is expensive...i've spent nearly 2k already on everything we had to and had to have for school already....and I Still have to buy my book which are around 600$ (theres a Bunch of them and in the set we also get tons of free stuff we can't get anywhere else, so for 600$ im pretty happy with that)

but I LOVE all the recommendations on here...I've went through almost every page and compiled a list of what i needed and now my bookbag (a rolling laptop bag i got at staples for 60$ which is awesome...) is filled to the brim with stuff...crazyness!!!

Save back money for car and home repairs.

Since I started nursing school, I had replace the water heater, the washer, the dryer, a stove and a fridge. I had to replace 8 tires, a water pump, timing belt, power steering hoses and a brake job.

I think it has something to do with Murphy's Law.

I hear you on that one. School starts on Monday and we just had to replace four tires. It was an unanticipated event. After recently spending a ton of money on books, supplies, and tuition, we did NOT need this to happen so close to the start of school.

On a serious note. Yes, a good stethascope, but not the top of the line; save that for after you get your license. A good watch with a second hand. Don't even worry about the NCLEX until your last year. Focus on school now; the material you are studying in the current semester (take the HURST review the summer before your senior year and again after graduation, for good measure, take it in between your last and second to last semester as well. Make the right friends, ones that like to study and study well; avoid the party people. I use "Nursing for Dummies" books a couple times, but never relied on them.

I think each person has their own idea of what type of stethoscope they wish to buy. I only choose a littlmans bc thats what I like and they last FOREVER. So in other words you get what you pay for. If you choose to buy one, I promise you, that you will still have a great stethoscope even after you get your license.:twocents::)

Why I said what I said was, my littmann cardiology III was pricey, something I got for graduation (and yes, still use) because I could not afford it as a student...
