What do you HATE to do at work?

Published

Hey

I thought it would be interesting to see what things nurses dread doing. For example, I hate suctioning people, there is something about seeing stuff go thru the suc cath that flips me out. Weird huh? I can take vomitting, poop, blood etc, but when its contained in that suc cath and moving thru to the cannister, I get sick. What about the rest of you?

I hate feeding people. Part of my job in LTC, but it takes sooooooo long to feed some of these folks.

I am a student in LTC & so far it's the feeding thing for me, too. I'm too impatient and I don't like begging and pleading. Plus I'm kind of weird about mouths/teeth. I didn't even really like feeding my own toddlers, so there ya go.

Although, I couldn't decide if it was more funny or disgusting the other day when my pt took out her denture and started nibbling on the attached food like a yummy BBQ rib.

oh i forgot one! although trach suctioning doesn't bother me, i can ignore the nasty secretions there-they are well contained. but, trach care-taking out the little piece and soaking it, scrubbing it out, etc. yuck! the sputum floating around in there-nasty nasty nasty. i tried as hard as i could to look out the window when i was scrubbing one out and not look at it. ewwwwwww

and as a ps-yes, i've seen lots and lots of the shift assessments, nurses notes, etc all on paper. not a biggie. in the ED its all computerized, though.

From many years ago, when I was an ER clerk...

The alcoholic who was brought in (usually some shade of yellow) who hasn't bathed in who-knows-how-long--and their B.O. lingers in our area long after the person has left.

Yuk!

I amazed at how quickly I've adapted to dealing with poo, though.

(I'm still a student...just starting out...)

Smelling the contents of diapers or ostomy bags from our short-gut babies who have dumping syndrome.

Anything having to do with poo esp. bad pans, colostomy, people who don't flush (don't mind ileosotmys though....maybe b/c it's liquid nicely contained in a bag???).

And women who have LOTS of coorifice facial hair (chronic corticosteriod users) and theres that thick dark hair all over their arms and face. Get a wax!!!!!! Maybe I should have worked at a salon as the waxer just to rid the world of yucky hair! ((((shivers))))

Gotta love it when they poo, pee, and vigorously wipe with 2 whole squares of toilet paper...then they reach up and grab ya (with the same hand) to get up from the toilet......oh that pi$$es me off! What were ya thinking?!! :angryfire

I hate to clock in....... No just kidding . I think it would be dealing with families. I can handle any nursing task but the unreasonable families....Oh that will put me in the grave..:)

I gotta agree on the dumping syndrome- those bedpans smell and look worse than ANYTHING I've ever dealt with- makes me literally gag!

and I agree with those who say dumping stuff in the toilet is the worst part- with those bedpans, there's just something about the sound of it hitting the water, and the smell rising up- oooooohhhh ughhhhh, shudder!!

"...My least favorite duty is charting though."

Please, please tell me that all charting, at every hospital in the US is

done via computer nowadays! (Old lady nursing student)

They tried it where I work, but it was a complete mess and totally unorganized, in addition to the computers always being 'down' that they went back to paper.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Geriatric, Behavioral Health.

The entitled drug seeker who is in SOOO MUUUCH PAAAIN, yelling for that shot NOW, unable to lift a foot or hand up off the bed, but 5 mins later (no exaggeration) strolls pretty as you please outside to go for a smoke. Don't see this much anymore, thank goodness...thanks to our wonderful folks in ER who triage these lovely folks right out the door.

My least favorite thing is to see (and hear) a call bell go off and the nurse who it belongs to continues to sit at the computer to finish her game of solitaire.
