What do you HATE to do at work?

Hey

I thought it would be interesting to see what things nurses dread doing. For example, I hate suctioning people, there is something about seeing stuff go thru the suc cath that flips me out. Weird huh? I can take vomitting, poop, blood etc, but when its contained in that suc cath and moving thru to the cannister, I get sick. What about the rest of you?

Work myself to death while 2 or 3 people say they are busy (yet they're sitting on their *** watching other people work)

Oh my gosh! Me too!!!! I literally gag right at the sink when I'm cleaning them and the gunk is coming off. Or when I take the emesis basin after they're brushed their teeth and there're chunks in it. Ick!!! Gives me chills just typing it.

Geeze, it's hard to limit it to just one thing....

If I had to pick ONE thing thatreally makes me want to yak, it would be taking dentures out of someone's mouth and there's food and stuff caked all over them. Now, I've never had a problem with bedpans, I can even suction people without a problem, but just the THOUGHT of handling those slimy things with only-god-knows-what all over them makes me want to blow chunks...Am I weird? LOL:confused:

with the smelly stuff you just need to learn how to totally breath thru your mouth......need to do a total nasal bypass. then the smelly's won't get you.
My take on that is i'd rather smell it than taste it....my lips are sealed shut when around noxious odors....that's just me I guess...

I hate postmortem care. Had to do it 4-5 times. Had to take out foley cath and D/C IV for dead person. WEll, how can i put it mildly -- you don't know from which orifice they might leak. Sorry. i didnt start the subject.

Hate to clean pt's mouth when they are dehydrated. YOu use those little sponges, and i try not to look what it is on them.

HATE TO COLLECT SPUTUM SPICEMEN.

Post mortem care....not usually a big deal for me, but having worked nocs before, i have on occasion helped wheel em to the morgue. Now that I HATE. Especially when the tech throws open the cooler to wheel the gurney in and a waft of dead cold air hits ya in the nostrils....bodies lined on the shelves. Disturbing. I avoid that trip at all costs.

manual disempaction!!!! I can clean up poo on an incontinent person, but I can't stand to dig it out!!!!

I hate getting am FSBS. We have a LOT of diabetics on our floor, and its not unusual for me to have 6-7 FSBS to get before I leave in the am. And our BGM is SO SLOW... It is just so time consuming, I guess thats why it irks me. And if it is idle too long ("Honey, can you help me to the bathroom first?") it turns itself off and you have to go thru the whole process and sign yourself in again and put in the pt's info again. :angryfire

That's about the only thing that really irks me, besides emptying GI secretions. The way it swirls in the toilet when you flush just really gets to me. :stone

Totally agree with you on that one. The thought of breathing through my mouth around bad odors always just grossed me out.

Amen. Do ya think we don't know by now that the dirty linen isn't getting emptied consistently? What part of too busy don't you grasp?....Maybe if I talk S-L-O-W-E-R...............besides, I thought you said OT is a mortal sin? Would emptying the linen carts qualify?

How about "customer service": the MOST used AND abused two words by our corporate flunkies...followed by the inevitable "metrics"...which, I have already heard, are going to be increased and will be confirmed at our next staff meeting...scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM. :angryfire

The phrase 'customer service' belongs at Kmart.
