Hey
I thought it would be interesting to see what things nurses dread doing. For example, I hate suctioning people, there is something about seeing stuff go thru the suc cath that flips me out. Weird huh? I can take vomitting, poop, blood etc, but when its contained in that suc cath and moving thru to the cannister, I get sick. What about the rest of you?

THAT'S MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:angryfire
Dealing with spiteful, mean docs on the phone can burn my butt. Doesn't happen at the hospital I work at now. However, at a different hospital several years ago, I recall a not so pleasureable encounter. The patient was cleared for discharge for home by all the docs to "be discharged this afternoon", except one consult doc who needed to be contacted to get the blessing. This doc had a rep for being difficult with nurses in general, belittling and condescending. The doc was outreached. The doc questioned in an arguing manner, "In the king's english, what do you mean IN THE AFTERNOON?" Since it was 3pm and afternoon typically means anything before 6pm, I told him..."before 6pm. All the docs have cleared him and the family is here to take him home." The patient was VERY stable. Well, let's just say, the doc ordered a slew of tests and labs to be done that ensured a lengthy stay past 6 pm. The patient and family waited and waited for the doc to answer his pages to return call to...get his results. Of course, they were normal. The doc finally called back at 8 pm and proudly announced "I guess he didn't go home, THIS AFTERNOON, did he?"...then cleared the patient for discharge. It was so unnecessary. What an idiot. I'm sure folks would have said, contact another doc to see if his orders could have been nixed as unnecessary. Not at this hospital, they banded very close together. The nursing hierarchy would not have been helpful here either, "give up your chair for doc" attitude was pervasive in this environment. Let's say, it was good to leave that place.
hummm....mouth care on pts who really really really need all their teeth pulled (um hey doc, why does he have sepsis???). one gentleman had teeth so bad you could smell them in the hall, and as i was swabbing his brown and black teeth they were bending backwards they were so loose.
then you have the other not so with it patients who bite the swab when you put it in their mouth and won't let go. i still haven't figured out any tricks to bypass that!!! :rotfl:
I absolutely detest ear irrigation. Seeing that wax floating around in water...disgusting. I have a coworker who can't deal with anything that has to do with toes. I'm hoping to strike a deal with her. She does any ear irrigation that comes our way and I will assist the doc with any in-grown toenails that need pulling out...fair trade I think.
What I hate about work:
1) going to work - there are so many more fun things to do at home.
2) rude hateful doctors.
3) rude hateful families.
4) rude hateful anyone else.
5) short-staffing.
6) doing anything painful to a child too young to understand (anyone under 21)
7) not having the meds/supplies available to provide the care needed/ordered.
Actually, I love my job. I love patient care. I just feel frustrated when I feel I can't do a GOOD job due to staffing, lack of supplies, inadequate orders with docs who can't be bothered, etc. That's why my doc doubled my bp med last year, then when I was still getting hypertensive at work, he put me on a beta-blocker so my body couldn't respond to stress with a 185/115 bp.

People who are able to and can afford to bathe, yet DO NOT!
Also: nasty belly buttons. Never thought i would say that, until i had to ask for 4 extra cotton swabs to clean one BEFORE i could even begin to prep the skin.
