What is the hardest nursing class?

Published

I am interested to know your hardest class. What did you do to get through it? Please do not use acronyms....not everyone will know what you mean.....Thanks!

Specializes in Inpatient Acute Rehab.

No doubt about it..... Pharmacology!!!

Specializes in Med/Surge, Psych, LTC, Home Health.

OB and Peds were both crammed into one semester. I got a C. :) That was by far the roughest semester and a lot of people in my class flunked it.

I also got a C my last semester, but that was mostly out of just being BURNED OUT on school.

i thought i was going to love maternal/child and peds, and hate psych. it was just the opposite in reality. part of the problem was that maternal/child was crammed in with critical care, and it made for extremely difficult studying. peds was difficult because talking with parents was not something that i had a knack for. the kids were great, but the family's were typically not.

i loved psych because it felt like it flowed in an organic, organized way (which is a credit to my instructor). sure, there were times when i felt uncomfortable, but they passed, and i could examine my discomfort in my homework. it made me think about my own responses to everyday things. it also reinforced the knowledge that i am one lucky woman. some of my patients lived through some of the most horrible abuse imaginable.

med/surg was only tricky because i had to learn the nursing process and how to formulate care plans. once i got it down and could manipulate care plans on my computer, it wasn't hard at all.

i loved patient assessment because i loved a & p. i often wished it was a 2 semester course.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

They were all equally hard in my ADN program, except I thought Pysch. Nursing was the easiest.

In an RN to BSN program and so the verdicts out, I'll be taking Pharmacology which I heard is a bear and Pathopysiology, and "senior project", so I'll let you know next year. :)

When I went to nursing school (BSN), we did not do prerequisites first. We did it altogether. I found chemistry and anatomy and physiology the hardsest. We had to take 12 credits of chemistry while we were taking nursing. Med surg was the hardest nursing course for me. I loved maternal child, peds and psych, and I ended up being a peds nurse, and now I am going into psych nursing. I always do better in what I am interestred in at the time. I also do well with structured organized teachers. Krisssy RN MA NP to be

What exactly is med/surg? None of the classes in my curriculum are called that. Alot of people complain about that class, however, so I would like to know what you do in that class. Also, which class do you have to do math calculations for? I thought my math days were over!!!!!:angryfire

Specializes in Assisted Living Nurse Manager.

In my program they used to call it Med/Surg and now it is called Nursing I,II, and III. It consists of all the systems and how to assess, prioritze and formulate care plans. It also teaches you how to recognize problems. And, yes we also had to do math problems throughout these classes. Next semester I am on to IV certification and that is whole new set of math equations to get used too . I am sure you have Med/Surg in your curriculum but under a different name.

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

Psychiatric nursing. Our clinicals were all done in a locked psychiatric unit with schizophrenic patients. They were very unpredicatible and scary. The care plans were a lot more different to do than a care plan for a medical patient. We also had several process recordings to do that were difficult because the oral comments of these patients are often very odd and difficult to understand and figure out.

Community Health.

We were told by the instructor we were in the class just for "the experience." However, exams were over a textbook that was so dry.... I was thankful for the B I pulled in the class, and the thought that I won't take Community II until my last semester of school.

Specializes in Ortho/Neuro.
No doubt about it..... Pharmacology!!!

I completely agree. Pharmacology is terrible! Although I think it varies at schools. My friend, who goes to a different school said how easy it was. By the way, she is not what you would call a "great student". She usually just makes it with a C. I am an A student and thought it was hard. Organic Chemistry comes in a close #2!

pharmacology....iv thereapy...yadda yadda yadda....i hated doing the calc's on both. our instructor was "not in the know". most of our classtime was spent with the only male in our class arguing her calculations and her spending the next 30 minutes discussing why she was right....it was awful...i am so glad that so far i haven't had to do much calculations other that give (1/2 tab, or basic match) none of that (dose desired/dose on hand).

my hardest class was basic nutrition....mostly the exchange diet....i have been doing this for 2 years and still don't know it...which, thank goodness, i have no reason to do it...:-d that is another thing, some of the stuff you learn in nursing school you will never use....kinda like geometry and algebra in high school...only reason you need it is if you are gonna teach it. :coollook:

Specializes in MS Home Health.

As part of my bachelors program I thought herbal science/herbology was extremly hard.
