What Do You Eat?

Published

What do you eat to get your through a long day of school/clinical?

I always try to eat breakfast. A green smoothie or an egg with a piece of toast. I want to try to stay away from coffee/carbonated beverages.

Do you eat lunch (do you even have the time?)

What do you think gives you the most energy, while keeping you alert?

Thanks!

We usually have 30 min for lunch and two short breaks each day, but I sometimes used this time for preparing for caring for the patients or studying for exams. I always had a homemade blueberry shake (nutrient dense food) for breakfast and lots of coffee, too!!! I am usually too preoccupied to be really hungry so salad for lunch and water or tea.

For your last question anything with vitamin B12 and protein

Be sure to have Banana, any kinds of Berries, toated Bread and yogurt or healthy protein-Soy milk.

Sure you had to ask that question!!!:banghead: My answer is too much coffee and nothing good. Two years in my nursing program and I have to work extra hard to get rid of nearly 45 extra pounds. Just ignore my post, have no good advice.:whistling:

Anything I can scarf down quickly that won't give me hiccups.

Always find time for lunch.... There are times you will be very busy but you must take care of yourself to adiquitly take care of your patients. Your brain and muscles work better when they are fueled with healthy food. Drink water, high protein, low carb (low not nonixistant) diet.

I usually drink a smoothie for breakfast with fruit, (raw) milk, and greens like spinach or kale. I'm also a 'weirdo' (I follow the paleo lifestyle) so I like bone broth (beef bones that were simmered in a crock pot) with an egg in it, like egg-drop soup. SO delicious and filling, especially at 5 in the morning when I usually can't stomach much.

Throughout clinical, I eat things that have a lot of protein, like 'meat rollups', just sandwich meat with veggies rolled up inside, chunks of ham, etc. I like nuts, but they aren't filling to me so I pair them with something else, like yoghurt. Hard boiled eggs are also a necessity for me. Everything I pack needs to be easily eaten, so if I have an apple, I have it cut into chunks (because there isn't always time to eat an entire apples), sandwiches cut into triangles, etc. I use these containers to make 'snack packs' with fruit, veggies, and a dip and they are awesome and leak free: Amazon.com: Ziploc Container, Divided Rectangle, 2-Count(Pack of 2): Health & Personal Care

I also REALLY like babyfood packets, like the ones with the straw thing. (Like these: Amazon.com : Happy Tot Organic Baby Food, Stage 4.22 Ounce, Spinach, Mango and Pear, 4.22-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 16) : Baby Snack Foods : Grocery & Gourmet Food) I'll usually bring one or two in my nurse pouch or scrubs pockets because they are really good emergency food that I can quickly eat in the bathroom if need be. I usually eat the veggie ones because they are more filling then the fruit ones. They seem silly, but I turned some of my classmates on to them and they swear by them now!

I ALWAYS have tons of food with me! I use this lunch tote with ice packs: Amazon.com: Insulated Lunch Tote with Yellow Trim and Zipper Closure: Reusable Lunch Bags: Kitchen & Dining

Green smoothie or protein shake, maybe a granola bar to go along with it. I'm not huge on breakfast but I feel my energy draining if I don't eat it.

Breakfast (beforehand because it's super important): brown sugar oatmeal mixed with light almond milk, a banana and 2 cups of coffee

Lunch: Peanut butter sandwich, strawberries or grapes, and sliced sweet peppers with ranch dressing

Snacks: a mix of Clif bar, sliced apples, those 100 calorie packs of chocolate prezels, yogurt, or sugar free pudding.

My biggest thing is water. I try to drink 16 oz by mid morning, another 16 oz by the time I leave clinical and 8-16 oz in the evening. Otherwise I get terrible headaches from dehydration.

COFFEE. Protein and a carb was my go to! I typically ate a breakfast burrito with some coffee. Got me through! :)
