What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Okay. You have repeted what you think several times and I have replied with what I think several times. I've been called out for repetition so I guess I'm calling you out for it now.

In respect for the other members who pointed it out to me, I will not repeate what I already said. You have communicated what you think very effectively. I get it. You have good points but I mostly do not agree.

Hey did you know there's an election tonight? Perhaps we should focus on that?

It stands to reason that if you ignore presented facts or evidence to tell me how you feel that I'm going to repeat myself in making points.

Feel free to focus upon the elections tonight, I'm not interested as the results will not be final just yet.  States that refuse to count early and mailed ballots as they come in turn the vote counting into an unnecessarily long process.  That means all that is available now is speculating and rhetoric.

We can talk about whatever we want in this thread...

I included the bit about laws and structural systems of oppression because that's a feature of racism in this country.  No, apparently millions of Americans are confused about the history of slavery in this country and are upset when the details and specifics are taught in schools.  You've heard of the conservative confusion and animus about made up stories of CRT curriculums in elementary schools, right? What's that all about?

I appreciate some of the info you post. The constant negativity is what I'm not as appreciative of. However this is a free country and you can say whatever you want!  Its a symbol of our freedom.

I think there is an issue of how slavery is taught more than an issue with how it is being taught. I see this from both sides. I don't imagine we will agree on this either.

Yes of course. You can talk about whatever you want! I just replied with that before I saw this.

I'm not certain how to frame the fact that nearly 300 republican candidates this cycle are straight forward election deniers. I'm not clear how that dangerous tool of fascists (creating doubt about election results) can be discussed in a positive light.  Do we just pretend like it's not happening and believe that surely there can't be right wing authoritarians in today's republican party? That seems unwise.

You think there might be an issue with how slavery is taught? What does that mean to you? Are we not supposed to teach that it was white men selling and trading non white humans in this country? Are we not supposed to teach about the serial rape, the cruelty, the family separation, the physical beatings and murders or the long term dehumanization of black men and women? Are we not supposed to talk about the theft of native land and the Trail of Tears or the broken treaties in ways that might make Americans feel uncomfortable?

So you ask me what I believe about racism just before you tell me what you won't discuss relative to racism. In response I'll ask you.  When were white people not making the laws or decisions in this country, when were they enslaved or lynched or generally denied participation in our democracy through voting?

White people in the USA may occasionally experience prejudice.  That's uncomfortable.  There is no institutional or structural racism present in the USA that disadvantages white people.

Oh... about that "each president chooses" justices for the Supreme Court.  Republicans denied the 44th president a SCOTUS  nomination because it was an election year and then gifted a SCOTUS nomination to the twice impeached 45th president after voting had already begun in an election to replace that fellow.

thanks TMB.  Much more direct.  I tried to get WW to think outside of his comfort zone, but Yes he shut me down too.

The last 3 Supreme Court justices were appointed by a president who lost the popular vote twice. That president was not elected democratically. They were approved by Senators who represent 43% of the population.

Those were the rules when the election was run.

Campaigns would be run differently if it was the popular vote that mattered.

We're not talking about politics much at work but that a storm is headed nearby, but the latest track has it coming north to north to us.  Florida is so bad that even a minor storm will know out power...in 2022.

That and that we're getting a $400 bonus for making some of our yearly goals.

Yes of course we need to teach our children all of that history. I most certainly do teach mine.

I come from a generation that we do not associate peoples actions or crimes based on the color of their skin. Or asign collective guilt for crimes of the past or present on a person's race. I learned in school and from my parents and was never taught that the history of racism was any less evil than it truly is.

If there are areas that it is not being taught, then that's something I would take interest in changing.

I find it it risky to teach the atrocities of humans based on skin color and religion. To do so will open up areas that may put marginalized communities more at risk. It opens up an opportunity for people to do it to everyone.  I most certainly would not point out crime stats according to skin color. I simply do not see fellow humans as a race or skin color(although I do respect and reconize their culture and past and present disparities and strengths that may be assiciated with race) .I see them as humans.  We speak of tolitarian fascist governments. The big example is the Big H in Germany. He too asigned collective guilt and sin on one group of people. We know how that turned out. Where as I do not believe this could happen here, it is still cut from the same discusting cloth. I will not teach my children to think that way. Nor will I allow anyone to teach them that either. Does this make me confused about CRT?

The confusion from CRT can be remedied by allowing school comitties, parents and the community to communicate and collaborate with what is being taught and how. Taking into consideration of the age of the child and some other factors. Parents have always taught their children values they felt were important. This is a good thing. Racism at at a time was accepted and taught to children. However not all parents thought that this was a good value to teach their children and that's how things change. I think the solution is to involve parents more. I believe that most people are good. I believe most people and schools want what's best for children. You know when as nurses we have different personalities of patients families? Some are very open and others are set in a certain way? We always collaborate with the entire family and take into consideration of everyone(patient is primary of course) most of the time all family members want what's best for their loved one. Same idea with this.

Open respectful communication regardless of race, religion or political affiliation.
