What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

I think SOTU can be useful for outlining future initiatives. And it is an opportunity for the Commander in Chief to communicate with citizens, with being filtered through an interviewer. But the applause breaks are tiresome and make the whole thing just drags on.

I don't think the SOTU is the place to criticize another administration.

In this instance, the other administration is running to prevent a second term for the current administration.  Additionally, the other administration tried to overthrow democracy after they lost the laser election.  This SOTU is at stake in the next election.

It just weird to me that someone stating that the President or VP didn't talk to them is considered an opinion.

There is plenty of time to campaign and contrast the administrations. I'd rather hear about the effects the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS Act, I did like hearing the details about the border security act.

I could agree if anything about our political debate and process in 2024 was conventional or commonplace.  I think that Biden has 8 months to counter a month's long campaign to paint him as feeble and incompetent.  That barrage of criticism related to his age and vigor and capacity has taken a toll on public opinion, taking advantage of that large stage to set that tone is necessary, IMV.

Since Biden's opponent is the same guy who lost and lied about the 2020 election and then tried to stop the transfer of power, nothing is more important than contrasting the two men.  The state of the union is in peril because of Biden's opponent and the people who support him in Congress.

Here's an example of Alaska conservatives making Anchorage educators feel safe, supported and appreciated in the era of Trump.  The propagandists are really manipulating the angry emotions of these people this election cycle.  Those conservative people are filled up with fabricated animus and then the propagandists agitate them, give them targets, and wait for the inevitable threats of violence.  It's a recipe that's been around for a hundred years.

I even saw the interview so I know what Beerman is trying to say is false about us thinking it is an "opinion."  The interview was real.  Geesh.

Gee, I wonder why democrats would be against such a measure...

"An effort by Senate Republicans to stop non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, from being counted on the census for the purposes of apportionment for House seats and the Electoral College was shot down later Friday after the measure failed to gain the support of a single Democrat."

Why do you wonder? It seems to me that we talked about this when the Trump administration was trying to put a citizenship question in the 2020 census.  The constitution requires a census of every person living in the country. Asking a citizenship question guarantees that some people will not complete the questionnaire for fear of deportation.  This is not a new concept.  This is an example of the republican party forwarding old ideas, IMV.

Citizenship question was dropped in 1950.

U.S. Council on Foreign Relations: Why Does the Census Matter?

Quote

The U.S. census is a direct count of every resident. Required by the Constitution, it has taken place every decade since 1790....... it is required by Article 1, Section 2, of the Constitution, which states that [PDF] an "actual enumeration" of the population must take place every ten years.

The U.S. census, undertaken every ten years, is a direct count of the total number of U.S. residents, including citizens, legal residents, long-term visitors, and undocumented immigrants...

It is used for several purposes, most prominently for reapportioning political power. It is the basis for distributing seats in the House of Representatives and in various state legislatures. Census findings also help determine the number of Electoral College votes for each state, which are used to elect the president.

Additionally, it is used to distribute more than $1.5 trillion [PDF] annually for federally funded programs, which are apportioned based on an area's population, age, and other factors. These programs include Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, Section 8 housing vouchers, Pell Grants for students, and highway construction and maintenance...

President Trump in 2018 announced plans to add a question about citizenship status to the short-form questionnaire every household answers, a practice abandoned since 1950. The administration argued that the change would help enforce the 1965 Voting Rights Act by achieving a more accurate count of eligible voters. However, critics alleged that it was instead intended to pressure millions of noncitizens to avoid filling out the census.

The issue went to the Supreme Court, which ruled against the Trump administration in June 2019

I thought there were other reasons for counting every person, like allotment of federal funds.

It's pretty ironic when conservatives are worried about equal representation in Congress, yet support each state having 2 senators, no matter what the size. A tumbleweed in Wyoming has more say in presidential elections than I do in Washington state.

The data is definitely used to  calculate distribution of funds for infrastructure, public safety, emergency planning, etc.

One citizen one vote would solve this problem but cause another problem for rural and small states.  We can do better in the middle but I don't know how it would be accomplished.  Solomon would say we could cut the 2nd Senator in half in Wyoming.
