What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

No.  It's from so-called Patriots especially those that feel they have to defend the constitution because the stolen election.

Poltico covered this a few weeks ago when he was put on leave.  Troubling.  No wonder the public has lost faith on the FBI.

It's particularly important to discredit them as they investigate Trump.

Troubling, yes. So was the “investigation” of Brett Kavanaugh when he was nominated.

Federal law enforcement has a lot to answer for. However, I’m not willing to totally discredit all the work they’re doing.

I think that’s why the DOJ is taking their sweet time with the current investigation into trump’s document mess. Measure twice, cut once.

I read this too when it happened.  Initially my first thought was, that's a heck of a coincidence, but then I thought the call was placed intentionally so that they would find those guns in that guy's office.  Someone must have known he had stockpile of weapons in his office (maybe the cleaning people??)

"What the heck do you think this guy was doing?"  Honestly, I think it's a bit cray cray to be bringing that many weapons or any weapons to your work.  I hate to sound judgy but I think he was planning on acting out and I was glad they caught him.

I agree.  It seems organizations held in high esteem long longer are:  the FBI and the CDC.  The FBI for what they are doing to Trump (the head of which was appointed by Trump interestingly enough), the CDC for it's flip flopping and delivering news we don't want to hear.

The police are not to be trusted because of their. brutality.  I heard a comedian bashing nurses saying they kill people because so many people die in the hospital "it just takes one bad nurse and you're dead".  Another on Twitter saying "doctors are not to be trusted".

I think blind trust isn't always good because then we get people there that abuse it, and that abuse needs be exposed and looked into.  Certain cultures need a makeover for sure.  But I'd like to believe in the FBI, the CDC and the medical establishment overall.

California’s newly-announced rule barring the sale of new gas-powered cars in 2035 will apply to Virginia as well under the terms of a 2021 state law, Attorney General Jason Miyares’s (R) office confirmed to The Hill on Monday.

In 2021, the state General Assembly, where Democrats then held majorities in both chambers, passed a law requiring the state to adopt the same automobile standards as those adopted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Although Democrats lost their majority in the state House of Delegates in 2021, efforts to repeal the legislation in this year’s legislative session were unsuccessful.

Death in Navy SEAL Training Exposes a Culture of Brutality, Cheating and Drugs https://nyti.ms/3cspGVt

Sailors who enter the program bolstered by steroids and hormones can push harder, recover faster and probably beat out the sailors who are trying to become SEALs while clean, said one senior SEAL leader with multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The inevitable effect, he said, is that a course designed to select the very best will end up selecting only the very best cheaters, and steadily fill the SEAL teams with war fighters who view rules as optional.

“What am I going to do with guys like that in a place like Afghanistan?” said the leader. “A guy who can do 100 pull-ups but can’t make an ethical decision?”

I fear that our law enforcement and our military are challenged in ethical decision making.

Mississippi’s Capital Loses Water as a Troubled System Faces a Fresh Crisis https://nyti.ms/3R7Q3PC

Emergency management officials began mobilizing a sprawling response, including gathering thousands of bottles of water to distribute at the city’s fire stations. Mr. Reeves encouraged residents with the means to buy their own bottled water to do so. “Leave these resources for those who absolutely need them,” he said of the emergency supplies.

The consequences of the facility’s problems rippled through Jackson, a city of 150,000 people, as well as Byram, a city of roughly 11,000 southwest of Jackson that relies on the same water system.

Public schools in Jackson switched to virtual learning, and the lack of water disrupted the operations of many businesses.

Yet the situation is exasperatingly familiar for many in Jackson, as the reliability of the city’s water system has been undermined by repeated failures in recent years. In 2021 the system was hobbled for weeks after a powerful Winter storm bombarded Mississippi with snow and ice, causing pipes and water mains to burst.

I wonder why the political leadership of the state doesn't want to invest in vital infrastructure... until there's a crisis.

Bill Barr Made the Decision to Clear Trump, and That Should Still Frighten Us https://nyti.ms/3CPmJJ0

Quote

It is outrageous that Mr. Barr acted so brazenly in the face of this framework. The point of requiring a special counsel was to provide for an independent determination of any potential criminal wrongdoing by Mr. Trump. But the political appointees in his Justice Department took what was the most important part of that inquiry — the decision of whether he committed crimes — and grabbed it for themselves. This was a fundamental betrayal of the special counsel guidelines not for some principle but because it protected their boss, Mr. Trump. It is the precise problem that the regulations were designed to avoid and why the regulations give the counsel “the full power and independent authority to exercise all investigative and prosecutorial functions of any United States attorney.”

I predict that Barr will face legal consequences for his corrupt actions.  It's always amusing that Trump apologists cry about weaponizing of the DOJ in the shadow of Barr. The projection never disappoints.

"These violent delights have violent ends"--WW

When I think about how people just seem to lose all sense of principle and how cheating and corruption have started to become the norm, it makes me very worried.  But the thing of it is, a lot of these things aren't new, we just didn't know about them.  It's like you just want the throw the whole system in the trash and start over.

But people are going to be people.  I don't know how much if any would change, and now, I don't know where we are all headed.  My sister was in the Navy, and I love what Navy Seals do (smh).  Everybody's occupations are under fire.
