What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

I saw the first moon landing on tv. I continue to be a shameless romantic on the subject of space exploration.

Looks like someone figured out that it might be good to know the way outta town.

Steven Carrillo will serve life in prison. A Santa Cruz County Superior Judge ruled on Friday, Aug. 26 that the former Air Force sergeant will serve that sentence without appeal or parole for killing a Santa Cruz deputy in 2020 while trying to spark a second civil war.

Carrillo’s sentence is the second given to the former airman, who had pleaded guilty both to the deputy’s death and to killing a federal security agent in Oakland in May 2020. Carrillo had ties to the BoogalooFormer Air Force sergeant sentenced to life for killing a cop in the name of sparking a second civil war Boys, a right-wing extremist group intent on starting a second civil war in the United States. The group is active online, and Carrillo posted about his plans and association with the Boogaloo movement.

We had other priorities.  I'm not sure of your age, but I remember the phrase "we can spend billions sending people to the moon but we...insert problem (feed our own people for example.)

For many it's an extravagant waste of money when there are so many problems at home.

For many citizens, beating the Soviet Union to the Moon ended the Space Race. Public support for expensive programs of human space exploration, never very high, declined considerably; enthusiasm was further eroded by the expense of the Vietnam War, the serious problems in the cities, and a growing sense of environmental crises. That disappointed space advocates who expected that Apollo would be the beginning of an era in which humans would move out into space, to bases on the Moon, space stations in Earth orbit, and landings on Mars.

I can understand that.  While I see space exploration as important I also understand we need to show restraint in spending.

So here’s a question: how much current commercial tech is based, in whole or in part, on R&D paid for by NASA?

Wikipedia has an article titled “NASA Spinoffs” that might be a good starting point for anyone interested.

My point being, the reservations voiced in Tweety’s quotes are very real, but not the whole economic story.

Here's a good breakdown of NASA budget and impact on the economy.   Apparently every $1.00 spent results in an $8.00 impact to the economy.  Furthering the idea that the government can indeed stimulate the economy.

I do think we have to balance it with what is going on in the world at home.  I can here the modern day version "Biden wants too increase NASA spending while the border is in crises"

Speaking of Civil War, which would described as violence between ideals rather than one region fighting a real war, the fear is real.

That said, Americans generally see the danger of civil war — whatever that means in practice — as very real. In YouGov’s polling, conducted for the Economist, 14 percent of respondents said civil war was “very likely” within 10 years. An additional 29 percent said it was “somewhat likely.” Among Trump voters, though, those figures were 19 percent and 34 percent, respectively — or 53 percent in total. Among Biden voters, the total was just over a third.

I tend to think that liberals thinking about civil war is largely influenced by what they hear conservatives muse or talk about.  Is there any talk of civil war ambitions from democrats or leftists at the state level?
