Western Governors University

Published

Hi everyone,

looking for some feedback on Western Governors University's RN-BSN program. Is it a reputable school? I don't want a Cracker Jack box degree. It could be a great school, but I've never heard of it and therefore, it makes me a little nervous. Would appreciate some advice by those who have attended or researched this program.

I decided to do a BSN program online through a brick and mortar school with a respected nursing program (although the school as a whole is not very well regarded) because I figured the next BS shoe to drop - beyond requiring BSNs in the first place - would be "no online school graduates need apply."

Western Governors' is accredited but I ultimately decided that the teaching component or lack thereof wasn't for me. It seems like a correspondence course, basically.

There is a forum here specifically for WGU. There are alot of WGU graduates and students here on AN, some who have gone on to other NP programs.

It's where I plan to attend after I graduate. I think it also depends on what you will be doing with that BSN.

WGU is accredited. That speaks volumes :) Good luck!

WGU was recently named an NLN Center of Excellence for Nursing Education. My WGU degree got me accepted to two different doctoral programs and a post-MSN NP program.

Specializes in Outpatient/Clinic, ClinDoc.

My work had no problem with my WGU degree. It's a great school. :)

I completed WGU's RN-to-BSN program earlier this year. My predominant regret is not having done this sooner.

My WGU degree helped me secure acceptance into the MSN program at a regional state university. It also helped me secure a great non-bedside job.

Im planning to start the RN-MSN this spring/summer. Ive been impressed by what I have learned about WGU. Also, I work for the VA and they support WGU nationally with the scholorship program. That speaks highly- the VA always joins new things late in the game and only after much research.

I completed my BSN and MSN through WGU. WGU is highly regarded by upper nursing leadership at my facility and one of the associate directors of nursing recently recommended their Healthcare MBA to my immediate manager.

Specializes in Home Health, Education.

I also received my BSN through WGU and I got accepted into a BSN-DNP/FNP program that starts next month before I even graduated.

WGU MSN currently doing my DNP, no problem with my WGU MSN

My MSN from WGU helped me advance within management at my FT job and landed me a teaching position at my PT job. WGU is a wonderful university!
