Hey guys!
This is kinda stupid, but I need to find a good watch with a second hand for my clinicals when I start in the spring. So far the only watch I've seen that I think will work good is the Swiss extreme (extreme II) with the black face and band. I wanted some ideas of the types of watches you guys use.
i personally bought a $200 watch, but more because i needed a nice watch. it has turned out to be a superb watch, but i sometimes wish i didnt have it on in clinicals and end up pulling my glove up extra high just to try and cover it...lol
i also have a timex ironman that i workout with and occasionally wear to clinicals
My cheap watch broke 1st semester of nursing school. With a little cash from my family over the holidays I bought this Wenger Titanium Watch, on sale of course. It has been the best watch! Glows in the dark, separate military time, and VERY light d/t the titanium-- very tough as well. I have had it for 2 years and It looks brand-new.
I had a cheap watch from Wal-Mart, but it broke after I accidentally banged it against something. I now have a Victorinox Base Camp, and it is great for nursing. It is somewhat pricey, though.

I got this one on sale for $40 on amazon... great deal huh!
Go to this spot on Amazon.com: Casio Analog Sea Watch.
Its a great watch. Feels like a quality build without being too large. Only fifty bucks.

I recommend AVOIDING leather bands. You want something that you can get wet and smear alcohol gel/foam on all day long. Rubber would be OK, though I hate the smell that builds up underneath and feel. Cloth is so-so as it retains moisture and is hard to thoroughly clean. Stainless steel is great because you can get it clean and it looks sharp.
It HAS to be water resistant!
Personally I won't pay over 150 for a watch because I tend to lose 'em.
I'm not yet in my BSN program yet but when I was flying most people, including myself, rocked a sub-$20 timex. Not saying many of us didn't have some really nice watches but nobody would wear those to work. The Timex was inexpensive, lots of functions yet simple, last forever, and if you happen to bust it all you are out is $15-20.
I bought my watch for $9.99 at Wal-Mart. Its a blue metal clip-on watch with large numbers, large hands and it glows in the dark and has a little LED light which I use when I work at night. I was told when I first started clinical that our watches could not have metal links because they harbor bacteria and their harder to clean so we had to have a leather or plastic band. Since I don't enjoy wearing watches and it makes my wrists itch I decided to get a clip-on watch that I keep on my uniform or in my pocket and it works really well and cleans really quickly too since their are no bands on it. I have a $19.99 watch that I used to use that has a fake leather band and it has big, glow in the dark numbers and it still works fine but I hated having to wear a watch around my wrist. I also found that I could use my clip on watch to distract infants and toddlers while I was listening for lung sounds and apical heart rates which is really convenient too.

I used a $10 watch from Wal-Mart all through clinicals, but when I graduated in December, my wife bought me a new one.
I got this one, the G-Shock, Redman model. I wanted something bold and unique. It was $140. It doesn't have a second hand, but it has a digital second clock that's seperate. It also has a 15 second increment portion that makes assessment very easy.
I would highly recommend checking out G-Shock.
And my plan is to buy this one next:
