What do you think of a nurse who asks for an easy assignment because she has homework and needs to study then after she is done assessing her ICU patients, she sits down at the desk and whips out her laptop to do homework. Then later on in the night, she spazzes out because she is behind and needs help.
What are some of the craziest things your co-workers have said in order to get a lighter assignment.

She's paid to work, not study and I wouldn't be suportive or accommodating. Granted sometimes on night shift there's down time and she should be allowed to study, but not if it compromises her patient care.

... I think that if she can't stand the heat- get out of the kitchen... I'd imagine ICU nursing is not for everyone... She might want to consider a less hectic/stressful placement- at least until she's done with her schooling... It's hard to balance work/school/(family), so that's not a slight against anyone in that situation- but one needs to figure out how to manage the load without it affecting their co-workers. If they're pawning off anything difficult onto their co-workers- for ANY reason (at least on a regular basis), they need to consider how to better manage their time/stress/workload. MHO. I can understand it once in a blue moon- everyone has "one of those days"- but if it becomes a habit? Time to look hard at ones situation and make some changes.
(Edited to add- I LOVE your tagline- it's hilarious )

i think the nurse who assigned the lazy nurse an "easy assignment" should not have done so in the first place. that nurse should've said "this is a workplace not a classroom". thirdly, patient care is the priority; it's an offense to coworkers to expect them to help out when studying has caused her to get behind. those coworkers who do help her out are enabling this behavior to continue.

Her behavior is totally unacceptable. Sometimes I ask for an easy assignment if I am sick and my nose won't stop running. I am amazed by the things people try to pull.
Yeah- it's one thing on a rare occasion- because of sickness- totally understandable- (something you can't control) but because she needs to study? Um... Try some better time management skills LOL

I didnt even know you could ask for an easy assignment. I would not be very tolerant of somebody who chooses to do classwork at work sorry.

i think if i ever went up to my CN and asked for an easy assignment, she would probably tell me to take a hike.

I'd think she had a lot of nerve even thinking about asking in the first place!

Yes, we have one that does this and she also tells us she really can't take any admits because she's too tired from watching her kids all day, or her boyfriend wouldn't watch them because he had a football game to watch, blah blah blah, etc etc etc.
Drives me nuts. Hire a babysitter if you're not sleeping. It's not MY job description to make YOURS easier because you don't want to pay a babysitter. I sure never tried this when my kids were little.
