Just a heads up to inquiring people who read this site. Nursing involves butt wiping, blood, snot, urine, etc. An RN by your name doesn't mean others deal with yucky realities of patient care.
Also, you will likely have to pay your dues job wise. You probably won't waltz into your dream job straight out of school. And, whatever job you get, you WILL work your rear end off.
Does anyone want to talk about pus and ear wax? And nose hair? Those geriatric patients are a gold mine.
I volunteered for a day at a rural clinic. By rural, I mean, you had to take a ferry to get there, and the last ferry run at 5:00 pm was your last hope of leaving this area, period. We had a guy who chronically over-produces ear wax, and when it gets beyond what he can manage at home without hearing loss, he comes in for some irrigation. The son of the owner of the practice bragged all about how he loves to clean out ears. I guess he gets a great sense of satisfaction from a pristine ear, like the previous post about a good, thorough cleaning of an impaction after constipation. Anyway, so he grabs a full syringe and IV catheter, hooks them together, sticks the cath carefully in the ear, and squirts. There was an immediate release of a chunk of wax, which promptly flew into the owner's son's mouth. Not gonna lie - his ego being overshadowed by the sound of dry heaving was a tiny bit hilarious.
We have quite a few nurses on our floor that will spend 10 minutes searching for a CNA to get a patient on a bedpan, instead of doing it themselves in 2 minutes.
Same story here. I made a verbal contract with the CNA's on my unit (who, by the way, are the best in the world IMHO) to allow them to smack some sense into me if I ever pulled that nonsense. We have gotten along famously ever since!
Just wanted to say, that TODay I worked 8 hours with...
NO bedpans
No urinals
No foleys
No bedside commodes
No vomit
No foul smells
No obnoxious patients/family
Everyone walked well without assistance.
Everyone was alert and oriented AND super nice and pleasant.
Pretty much fixed everyone with Iv fluids, morphine, zofran or nitro (or a combo).
so, yeah...and best part...
it was all double time!
Days like today ... Like never happen.
edit to add
some unknown person in the line in front of me at chipotle paid for my order...
hubby cleaned the house before he left for work but not before he bought me my fav chocolate ...
i have the house to myself until tomorrow evening. I'm already in my pjs.
i think I need to play the lotto today.

Surely you were sleeping that 8 hours, not working?! That's a thing of beauty! Send those vibes my way for my shift tomorrow!
