I was wondering if anyone knows if withdrawal from a class will hurt you to get accepted to a nursing program. I am having a hard time in my biology class and don't want to have a failing grade on my record. I really do believe that sometimes it all depends on what teacher you get, in how well you do. Help!.

In my experience a W doesn't matter. Eventual completion of the course with a successful grade, however, does.

It does matter. My past has caught up with me and is bitting me in the BUTT! I applied to 2 schools last year and didn't get in because of the W's. Now I am applying to more schools this year and 1 already gave me a denial letter because of the W. Try not to have them on your record because they look bad. Also, failing grades in any of the preqs look bad as well. Atleast this is my experience. I have retaken the classes so we will see what happens.

One or two W's won't do much harm, but if you have a lot of them it becomes a red flag.

I only applied to the top two BSN programs in my state. I had excellent GPA, experience, etc. But, I had several Ws. One program rejected me. The other program accepted me and gave me scholarships and grants. Take that for what you will.

I do not believe that W's OR F's will hurt you as long as: you repeat the class and earn an A AND you limit your F's or W's to no more than 2 (try not to even get 2). But if you making withdrawals or failing a habit, schools will get suspicious. Good luck.

I had a number of Ws but got into grad schools (back in the day) and and a top notch nursing school just fine. It's better than getting a C a lot of the time. Most certainly better than a failing grade. I don't think I ever retook the same class again, though, or dropped below full time (which can flag you as academic probation). I wonder how much schools really dig through your transcript or just look at your GPA and essays.

yes it can depends the school, i can only apply to three schools because i have more than 2 w's but the schools i can apply to worries about F's in ur sciences.
Thank you everyone. I right now have 2 C's. one in Biology and 1 in human growth & development The teachers make it very hard and both classes are online. I am going to try my best to bring both grades up but it is hard with these teachers and I really don't like the thought of even having c's. what should I do.

A few W's won't hurt you. No worries

An F is worse than a W. A few W's won't hurt, but you don't want more than that.
Good luck!

I would check with the nursing programs you intend on applying at. I know the nursing programs here in the Sacramento area make a big deal over having W's in any of the science prerequisites. Good luck!!!
