Vanderbilt Pay Scale

Published

I don't expect it to be any better than anywhere else, but I don't know what anywhere else pays, either.

I'm thinking of signing on with them but I wonder what I can expect to make?

The drive will be over an hour to get there.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.

They must have went up on the salary.

everyone seems to think vandy is the lowest paying hospital in nashville but they're really not! i work there and new grad in the ortho is $18.50 which is the same for new grad in the cardiac unit at st thomas. i work with two nurses who came from st thomas that say they left there because vandy pays more and the diffs are also more

What is the retirement and other benefits like at Vandy?

I have a hard time believing this "teaching hospital is worth the decreased pay" bit. That may come in handy if you are doing a residency or are a physician, but not for regular staff nurses. I've worked at "teaching hospitals" before and it is more dependent on the people you work with. there are plenty of staff nurses that are willing to teach others at non-teaching hospitals too.

I'm so with you. I don't care if the name on the front of the hospital is Family Dollar General Hospital. As long as there are sick, critical, unstable patients for me to take care of, good money/benefits/and work:life balance and GOOD managers....sign me up. I don't care if it's Vanderbilt, Duke, Mass Gen, or Mayo posted on the top of the building.

With the type of work we put ourselves through... why would any nurse be willing to accept 35000 basis as a stating salary... My boyfriend is possibly taking a job down there and this alone drove me away from Vanderbuilt when they told me I would only make 20.50 an hour that is horrible to my profession.... I make 29.50 an hour as a new grad.... Its an insult to nurses everywhere!

Are you from NJ? I'm thinking the cost of living in TN would be much cheaper than NJ which is why the pay rate is so different. I can tell you it will be very difficult to find a new grad job in TN for $29.50/hr.

Specializes in Emergency Dept, ICU.

Vanderbilt is still notorious for low pay in the nashville area. And the only 'transfers' you will get are trauma transfers. And often these days St Thomas and Baptist will take traumas as long as it is not multi-trauma.

The benefits are good, but not that good in my opinion. The retirement plan is not top of the nashville market.

I work at both Vanderbilt ED and another Nashville hospital critical care department. I can tell you that the pay for new grads in the critical care area comes out to be about the same with the shift diffs. But...Vandy has the best benefits around. Even better when you have a family and you need to find someway of paying for your children's college. Also, I have noticed that nurses are all the time getting called off at the other hospital and losing pay because they always have a low census. At least at Vandy, you can pretty much guarantee that you will not be called off.

As far as traumas going to other hospitals, I don't see that happening. We are the only Level 1 trauma center in the middle TN area. We also have Level 2 traumas come into our facility all the time. Now, if the patient is able to specify the hospital that they want to go to and refuses Vandy, the EMT has to take the patient where they want to go. If not, it is considered kidnapping.
