  1. Just yesterday I saw on the VA careers website that they are hiring new grads in South Carolina. I think the city was Charleston. The website I found it on was www.vacareers.va.gov. Hope this helps.
  2. I know from volunteering in a NICU that those nurses deal with a lot of cuts due to occasional lack of babies. I was wondering what other departments also cut a lot of shifts and which ones need all their staff no matter what?
  3. If you are in Montgomery, Baptist hospitals have some scholarships available. I do know that at one time, they would pay for your schooling if you signed a two year contract with them. I'm not sure if that is available anymore. Their website is baptistfirst.org. Once you go to the website, go to foundation and then scholarships.
  4. Hi Everyone, I have read a lot of posts about there not being any jobs available. My school has a job website and on that site, there are a lot of listings for Sentara Healthcare which is in Virginia. I looks from the listings that they have a lot of jobs open and some of them will take new grads. You can find their website by typing in sentara on yahoo. I hope this info helps some of you looking for jobs.
  5. I volunteer in a NICU and like you, I am not allowed to do anything medical, just basically assist nurses, rock babies, run errands, etc.. The good thing is, I have been there for a while now so as the nurses have gotten to know me, they have started teaching me. It is a great environment for learning even if it isn't hands on. Hopefully it will work out that way for you too.
  6. I am still just a pre-nursing student, but I am wondering about death procedures for personal reasons. A few years ago, my husband died from a brain tumor and under hospice care he followed the key points of death that were outlined in a book I was given. When he started his "fish out of water" breathing, he died within about 6 hours. The hospice nurse was able to pinpoint it to the hour. Well, I just recently had a friend who lost a child from cancer and when she was dying she seemed to hang on forever. It was awful. She went through that last stage of death for almost a week. There were at least five times we were sure she was gone and then she would take a huge breath and still be alive. So is this typical? I was just wondering if the management of death was different between adults and children. I'm sorry if this is a sensitive subject but I guess since I am pre-nursing I am more curious than I would have been otherwise
  7. What is the oldest you can be for the NTP? I know they say on the website, 48 to be a nurse, but I saw in another question (a long time ago) and I asked a friend who works at Maxwell and they both said 39. Why would the new grad age be younger than the experienced age? Nursing is going to be a second career for me so I am a bit older than 39. Are my dreams over?
  8. What is the retirement and other benefits like at Vandy?
  9. Where are all the medical recruiters? I live in Alabama and when I get on the AF website it tells me the closet recruiter is in Baton Rouge. Don't I have to meet with a recruiter to get signed up? Also, does anyone have a good recruiter that they trust? Mostly I hear bad stuff about recruiters.
  10. What are the benefits and retirement like at MUSC? Do they have 401k or a pension plan?
  11. Does the ICU/ER speciality course include NICU?
  12. Thank you for all the advice. So, if I end up having to drink all the water, how many bathroom breaks do we get during the day? If I have an emergency and have to go will I be able to leave to do so?
  13. On the Air Force website it states that you must drink 3 glasses of water with every meal, but that you could get a waiver if you can't drink that much. Do they really let you do that and does anyone know if the waiver is hard to get? I cannot drink that much water because I will get sick and have to use the bathroom, bad, all the time.
