  1. 0645 - 1900 is supposed to be the shift hours. By the time the oncoming shift comes in and gets report it is 1915 or a bit later by the time we leave. I live 7 miles away which takes me 10-15 minutes to drive. I never hit traffic. Definitely no time to see family I come home, attempt to workout, cook dinner and, eat. Barely enough time to do that before I have to go to bed to do it again the next day. No real time to wind down unless I want to stay up late and be tired the next morning.
  2. So I've been getting more and more frustrated and angry at work for various reasons. Anything from long hours to mean/ungrateful patients. I've worked ER since 2006 with a small stay in icu in there. I feel like it is time for a change, and I'm kind of thinking of getting out of nursing all together. I would like a more steady schedule. Something 7-3 or 8-4. Yeah I have 4 days off a week now but I'd rather work a couple days more during the week and be off in the afternoon to be able to come home, workout, and see my wife before having to go to bed to wake up at 5 and do it again tomorrow. Has anyone ever felt this way before or almost gone through a complete career change to be happier?

doubt it. many hospitals don't even offer an increase in your hourly rate with the certification (which is why a lot of people don't bother with it)
  4. pay is actually a little less than that for new grads. i know of a new grad in the new residency making
  5. i dont work nights, but thats why i don't answer calls from work when i'm not working. if i want to come in and work extra, i'll let you know. if something is wrong, deal with it and tell me about it when i come in next.
  6. Erlanger is a Level 1 trauma facility, not 3
  7. no relocation bonus that i know of. benefits are fine with a family that large, but for a two person family w/o kids it is expensive b/c there is no employee + spouse plan. it is either employee, or family. the price nearly triples to simply add a only a spouse
  8. not exactly sure you can do that. it is called practicing w/o a license and is illegal. for you to sit for the license exam you have to have a school sign off to the board saying you have completed school and are prepared for the exam. i'm surprised the max out is that low there. i make very close to what granny makes at a hospital in knoxville and i've been out of school for close to 2 years. demand more granny. you're worth it :)
  9. Great hospital and great city to live in. Pay is low for the entire area and east TN, benefits are mediocre and possibly expensive depending on what your family size is. I think it is 5-6:1 on med-surg floors
  10. 1. wow, defensive much? the poster simply said it is hard to believe, which it is. letting someone in on the contingency of finishing one pre-req class before the program starts is one thing, but allowing someone to completely forego ALL the pre-reqs is hard to believe.

I recently moved from Memphis. My advice...don't move there. Memphis is the epitome of what happens when people just stop caring about anything but themselves. A lot of the city is corrupt, trashy, ghetto, and dangerous. It is an ok place to go for a day or two to site see, but I cannot see why anyone would ever want to live there.

i will say this though. there is a reason they went through like 5 ceo's or directors (whatever their term was) in a short period of time. you're better off going to methodist university if you want something downtown, or one of the other facilities in the areas surrounding memphis
  13. This reminds me of a person I had a talk with at an employee health office for a hospital I was working at. He was an army medic of some years, great experience, and willing to work. The problem came in that legally he could not do anything in an office other than draw blood and maybe give a TB test b/c he had no license to practice under. He was telling me that he didn't understand why he couldn't get a job in the ED b/c he was an army medic. You could be the best medic in the world, but in civilian world you have to have licenses to practice.
  14. I have had this discussion with a few military medics and it all boils down to licensing. Yeah you were an army medic. great! thank you for your service. at the end of the day in the civilian world if you cannot show proof of a state license to practice as a medic or rn, then it is futile to argue about it. who cares about who does what; we're on the same team. just do what is expected of you and work with others you are supposed to. quit being counterproductive and having d!ck measuring contests. it doesn't benefit anyone...especially the patients!!

the med is a sinking ship. avoid it if at all possible. the vast majority of the patients and people that work there are ghetto and the hospital is ran as such. this is by no means a shot at anyone that works there, just an observation from the time that i spent working there. there are a couple departments that are not, but there are much better hospitals in memphis for employment.
