UTHSC Summer 2017

Published

Hi everyone, I just wanted to begin a thread for all UT Health SON students who are applying for Summer 2017. I didn't see a thread created for this term yet. I look forward to getting to know all of you as we begin this long journey. Feel free to share anything regarding the application process and/or ask any questions that you may have!

I started Summer 16 and we started with 120-125 students.

How many students remain in the program???

what is the schedule like for summer?

does the school provide scrubs or we have to get it ourselves?

is the gym free?

what color are the scrubs? :)

Hey everyone! Congrats to those who have been accepted, and for those that have not heard back yet- don't worry! I believe they sent out acceptances in three waves when I was accepted, so there is still time. I am currently in my first semester at UTHealth. I really do enjoy the program. Everyone handles nursing school differently and some will find it more difficult than others. For me, it isn't THAT bad. You really just have to get used to studying all of the time. I have a son so I have to manage my time well. I typically go to bed right after he does and wake up around 3-4am to study before class. I study in between classes as well, but I rarely study when I get home for the evening. I usually take a day or two (depending on which test we have the following week) off on the weekend just because I don't want to get burned out. You will just have to manage your time well. As of right now, there is nothing that I dislike about the program.

My schedule is Monday-Thursday- Monday is 8am-1:30, Tuesday is 8-12, Wednesday is 9-4, and Thursday I have clinical. Before you guys start clinical you will have a skills lab on Friday from like 8-12 I think? The professors do record all of the lectures for the first semester, but I don't think any of the lectures are recorded after that. As of right now we do not have an online class. I think we will in our second semester. My advice to new students is just try to relax. Just go into nursing school knowing that it is tough and you will probably be studying much more than you have had to in the past, but try not to stress about it! It is really all about managing your time well.

I know you said you go to be after your kid does.

but by what time you are in bed?

how much did you spend in books and supplies for one semester?

do you get to do a lot of work in the computer or is it a very traditional program?

do you do a lot of group work?

Is BLS certification different from CPR? If so, do we have to get both? Thanks:)

I go to bed SUPER early. Anywhere from 8-10pm (10pm is the absolute latest for me). I always try to make sure I get a decent amount of sleep because I can't function otherwise.

I did not buy any textbooks for this semester other than the newest edition of the "nursing diagnosis" book which helps a lot in clinical. I did have to buy my stethoscope which was around $100, my shoes for clinical $65, I bought two sets of scrubs used with the patches sewn on for $60, and other than that I've spent money on parking/gas. I suggest taking the Metro Park & Ride if possible.

We don't really do a lot of work on the computer. As far as group work goes, the only group project I have done so far is my first care plan- that will depend on who you have for a clinical instructor though.

You will need the BLS Provider course from the AHA which is the CPR certification for Healthcare workers and is good for 2 years. If you have any questions feel free to message me...I teach BLS on a daily basis.

The school supplies the scrubs and you just buy from them? Is there a "new" option for the scrubs.

I heard someone mention before on one of these posts about a sim-lab kit from the bookstore, is that true?

Do you have to wear a certain shoe, color, material?

You can buy the scrubs from the school or any uniform store. They just have to be navy blue. The patches can be bought at the bookstore. If you do buy textbooks, the bookstore will have all of those and they will price match with Amazon. You can buy your stethoscope there, but I ordered mine online. As far as the sim lab kit, yes you do have to buy one of those (sorry I forgot to mention that previously). It's referred to as a "black bag" and you will have to buy it from the bookstore for around $115.

Shoes will kind of depend on what your clinical instructor prefers, but typically you are going to need a solid color shoe made of a non-porous material like leather. I bought black clogs from sketchers.

The Junior League of Houston offers free 2-night courses in BLS for Healthcare providers....

Anyone else heard anything?

Very good information to have. Do you know if we will receive an email with instructions for financial aid? I was told that because it's a full semester in the summer, UTH has a different aid scheme than normal schools (where summer is out-of-pocket).
